Heroes IV Screenshots
|
Here are some pictures of the game. Keep in mind that these pictures are not from the finished game, so things could change by the time the final game is released. However, it is safe to assume these pictures are a rough idea of how the final game will look. Click on an image to open it in a new window.

Here is a picture of some snowy terrain. The graphic detail is incredible. Everything has a bigger and sharper look than Heroes III did. I was glad to see this picture because the first Heroes IV screenshot released looked somewhat washed out. Some familiar sights on this picture are the lumber and crystals lying on the ground in the center of the image. There is also a lighthouse and shipyard along the shore. What appears to be a town is to the left of the lighthouse, and above the town is some odd building that's in a couple of the pictures. You can also see movement arrows near the shipyard.

This picture is over ash/lava terrain. It features a large walled structure in the top right corner, but I don't know if it's supposed to be a town or not. I would guess that this is the Asylum town which seems like it would have most in common with the Dungeon from Heroes III. Looking at the heroes and creatures in the bar on the right backs up that idea. This picture also shows off bridges. It's about time they got those in a Heroes game. The tower with the green flags in front of the town appear to be a border guard or garrison. The bottom left corner of the picture has another flagged tower-like structure. The stone head with the glowing eyes and open mouth is probably a teleporter.

Another ash/lava scene. I am quite certain that the structure in the top right corner is a Necropolis town. It looks like there is an axe in the road leaving town. It's probably an artifact like the Centaur's Axe or Pendant of Dispassion. Lots of resources on the ground in this picture as well, gold piles, sulfur, ore carts, gems, crystals, and two treasure chests. It looks like there is an Eye of the Magi in the bottom center, a few other scattered artifacts, and some odd statue with a huge gut.

Another town, this time on swampy terrain. I'd guess that this town is probably the Haven. A sign is near the town, and following the road takes you to some Black Dragons. I'm glad to see them! Will they retake the throne in Heroes IV? You can also see some tents to the left. Some kind of mercenary camp or marketplace perhaps? You can also see one of those dancing leprechauns below the castle, and a creepy looking magic well below that.

This image shows off the game's 1280x1024 resolution. Notice your visible area of the map will be much larger if your monitor and video card can support this resolution. You also have more information about the selected hero in the bar on the right if you are running this resolution. On the top left is something that might be a town. I'd guess Haven if it is one. I'm not sure anymore though. On the top right edge of the picture are more Black Dragons, and an familar artifact from Heroes III, Scales of the Greater Basilisk. Below that is a magic lamp. It could be an artifact, or maybe it's a place to recruit Genies?

Combat! It looks like the combat terrain has not been added yet. This picture is in 1280x1024 resolution, so if you are only running 1024x768, you'll probably have to scroll the battlefield to see everything. It looks like 4 stacks of Ancient Behemoths are on one side in this battle. The other side seems to be an Alchemist (hero) in front. Then, from left to right: Dwarves, Gold Golems, Halflings, Mages, Titans, and Genies. These are all from the Academy.

Lots of water here. You can see some chains blocking off the harbor, and the tower between the chains has a colored flag on it. I guess that would mean players of a certain color, or players with a certain key could go through it. It looks like there is a place to recruit beholders in the top left corner. I like the tiny island on the bottom left corner. There is a little green arrow on the minimap. I'm not sure if that's the cursor or a pointer saying where they are on the screen. The minimap does appear that it needs some more work before it will be finished though.

The town in this picture appears to be an Academy. Next to the road below the town, you can see a Nightmare, one of the new creatures in Heroes IV. Other than that, there's some bridges, a water wheel, and various scattered resources. Nothing overly special, but more nice graphics and you can see a few creature camps on the map.

This is a 1024x768 version of the fifth picture. By comparing the two, you can see that you get a much larger view of the world if your monitor can support 1280x1024 resolution.

Another combat image. The bottom army is the same as in the sixth picture, but they're fighting Minotaurs instead of Ancient Behemoths. This picture is also using 1024x768 pixels instead of 1280x1024. When playing the game like this, there is less blank space in the menu on the right, but it looks like the creatures were shrunk down in size/quality to fit on the lower monitor settings.
