Seen it. And frankly religions should be taught at schools, maybe that way people would actualy know what they were talking about when arguing about them. It just shouldn't be taught in science class.

I dont think creationism counts as understanding of religions.And I prefer learning about it in sociology and(partially)philosophy than have it as a separate class.stefan.urlus wrote:agreed TT, i had it at my school and it helps to have a rudimentary understanding of the other religions, especially at these times of strife
i think it would get lost in amongst those other topics DL .... and creation vs evolution should never be taught in my opinion .... there is no real proof that you can present for either .... strangely they both require faith for their validity

Fosile evidence and radiation mutation arent proof enough for the evolution?How about the growth in hight between a modern man and ancient one?Or genetic engineering?Theres lots of proof for evolution.I am not saying that it hapens randomly,or guided by someone,but that evolution is happening.If creationism sayd that evolution was trigered and/or tailored by some divine entity,Id have nothing against it.But it saying that evolution never happened is just wrong.stefan.urlus wrote:i think it would get lost in amongst those other topics DL .... and creation vs evolution should never be taught in my opinion .... there is no real proof that you can present for either .... strangely they both require faith for their validity
And this is way of topic.We should either stop it,or open the new thread.

stefan.urlus got it wrong, there is proof for evolution, it just isn't proven. Creationism on the other hand can't be scientificaly proved. Thus not science.DaemianLucifer wrote: Fosile evidence and radiation mutation arent proof enough for the evolution?How about the growth in hight between a modern man and ancient one?Or genetic engineering?Theres lots of proof for evolution.
And imo teaching religions in philosophy class wouldn't be a good thing, it would just confuse the issue more. Religion isn't 100% philosophy.

Proof and proven are dangerous words. Better to say that there is substantial evidence to support evolution, so much so that the theory is pretty much accepted as fact by scientists worldwide, much the same way that relativity or quantum "theories" are accepted as "fact". And furthermore, I'd be careful EVER claiming that anything cannot be "scientifically proven" - as if that has any meaning whatsoever.ThunderTitan wrote: stefan.urlus got it wrong, there is proof for evolution, it just isn't proven. exactly the point i was making, thanks CorribusProof and proven are dangerous words. faith is required since the "proof" is not really proof at all. I certainly am a believer in evolution, as it has some evidence to support it, but think that we (as the human race) will never have the full answer

This one can be used in everything.Is it really true that the massive bodies have higher gravity?What if it works in a very similar but different way,and we may never find what way it is?Thats where occams razor comes into place,and the most probable solution is accepted.True,there is a chance that world was created 5000 years ago,and fosile evidence are just planted,but what are the odds for that?Also,if youll never know the real reason why something happened,why not accepting the one that seems most likely to you?stefan.urlus wrote: exactly the point i was making, thanks Corribus

Creationism could be proven. A being could show up and demonstrate the ability to manifest matter and energy, and to organize it into living systems.
I've always taken the position that I will become a Christian if and when Jesus appears to me. Could be he is real and does not care to do so. Could be he is planning to appear later on. But for now, for me, he does not exist.
Same goes for the Creator.

Before you criticize someone, first walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you'll be a mile away. And you'll have their shoes.
exactly what i stated i had done .... i am a believer in evolution, but made an observation that i think we will never know for sure which was actually true, the fact that we have scientific evidence for one and basically just faith for the other, makes me side with the evolution argument, but it can't be proven (at least not yet), and same for creation (unless caradoc's event occurs
)

Well, for it to be considered proof in the scientific sense, there'd have to be a way to summon that being at will. The fact that the Bible claims that Jesus walked on water can't be seen as proof of him being divine in the scientific sense, as repeatability is a very important part of science.Caradoc wrote:Creationism could be proven. I'm not sure that being able to summon the "supreme being" at will would either be proof, or really in keeping with having a "supreme being"
perhaps that being showing everyone that he/she/it exists and can do basically anything he/she/it wants would be proof - not even really sure about that though

Well that's stupid. How do you know that's not some really advanced alien or something?Creationism could be proven. A being could show up and demonstrate the ability to manifest matter and energy, and to organize it into living systems.
