The problem comes as you can surround the stack with low number stacks, and make the attacker have to kill them all to get to the stack behind them. A 4x4 stack would have big problems getting to a 2x2 one. The enemy can even move another stack in position after you killed the first four.

4x4 units isn't 4 times 1 unit. And the MD didn't have a square shape.
The BF size has nothing to do with what i said. Creature size does. But i guess it could be balanced in some way, it just might take too much effort.
