My biggest complaint to date has been while UBI may be about to release a great game (time will tell on that), they public relation and release of information to the media has been incompetent. UBI management needs to take a hard look at that department and perhaps clean house.
Fabrice answered this question of the french official forums :
L'éditeur de carte sera bien fourni lors d'un update gratuit du jeu, mais plutôt en début d'été, vers juillet.

That's true, it has been reported it would be released as a free update, the contradiction is the UBI store lists a power editor, as being included. There has also been very little if any information about its capabilities. Releasing it a month or so after the game as long as its free, is not that big of a deal, but what is the deal is what will it be able to do.

I only hope you can download the update on another computer than the one where the game is installed, because for instance I have no Internet access at home...

A game with a fantastic editor that it is otherwise mediocre won't sell, while a game that itself is fantastic, with no editing potential at all (for instance any consol game that's worth mentioning) will sell well.
Thats where you are mistaken.Just look at HIV for example.Without the fantastic editor,Im not sure anyone wouldve play it for so long.
Actually, speaking as one who doesn't have H4 (though I probably will once H5 comes out...) I think the main thing causing H4 to survive is Equilibrus.

For H3, I would agree that it is the editor that has made it last, but for H4 it seems like that alone was not enough.

I agree there, I don't have Equi, but I'm still playing HoMM IV. Really the thing that kept HoMM IV from being totally puked out by the fans was the ability to make something of it themselves.

Equilibris gave a big, big boost to the game, but without the ongoing supply of user-made maps, I would have given up on the game long before Equilibris came out.

There is no editor with the game, hence why I'm here reading about it to see if it's some kind of mistake or not.

Interesting observation, hopefully but it seems too forward thinking for them. More likely the editor is just not ready.

Well, it's not a bad choice for the map editor to come with an update. People won't really be able to make top-notch maps until they've played a bit and it'll take us a while to work through the maps that come with the game. It's not like having to wait for a patch to get multiplayer in HOMM4.

Kalah wrote:A descent editor gives a greatly increased replayability, and Ubi know of this. The result is a game that can be made better by players/fans even if it should happen to be released as a mediocre game.

Fabrice is aware that we want a good editor, and I am sure he's given it some thought. He hasn't promised us anything though; I think his last response to the question was something like: "We'll see."
Well we now know that there will be an editor released as a free download a month or so after the game itself comes out.

I think it was Fabrice who at one point said that Ubisoft recoginizes the value of fan made content so I have high hopes for the editor. We'll just have to wait and see what we can do with it.

Now the only question is wether Nival will be the one that makes the Editor patch... :devious:

Yes, it is ! Goddamnit ! The editor is an essential part of the game, and it should be included in the original release. Ubisoft tries to release an unfinished game, just like 3DO/NWC did with Heroes 4. This time it is even worse.
A free update, following 2 months later, isn't a good solution. Not everebody can download 200 MB file. Shameful.

200Mb? Wow. Where'd that come from? What is this anyway, the race to make the first fan-made map?

I believe it should be included, but it appears that boat has sailed. The fact it will be a 'free' update is the next best thing as long as the capabilities justify the delay. :beg: 200 mb I am sure was an exaggeration for impact, because if it is that big then it either will be great or very poorly executed code. With the delay it had better be at the very least an improved version of the H-IV editor with campaign capability; otherwise they can keep their game and editor at UBI HQ.
Kalah wrote:200Mb? Wow. Where'd that come from? What is this anyway, the race to make the first fan-made map?
Well it took me 3 years to finish my first H-IV map, so that's a race I won't win. :D

Yep. The 200 Mb is an exaggeration for impact. But even if it is only 40-50 MB (wich is more likely, considering all the stuff it has to include), those who don't have a broadband connection (many people) won't be able to download it.

The H4 editor is 4.3 MB, and I don't see why the H5 one should be significantly larger. Most graphics would already be installed.

Probably it will be small, the Warcraft III editor is only 5.7 mb. It is the princple of the issue though more than anything else. It sure would be nice if stuff like this was actually in a game when I bought it.

I'm not fond of the idea either. All I was saying is that it probably won't be such a humongous download as Vel suggested.
