They already have that in the form of another adventure map object. However, since there is only one type of rare resource and its scarce, the cost is rendered extreme and you end up never using it.
It's been years since I last played any of the older games, but I recall that the tree of knowledge was asking for either gems or gold.

Only it now asks for a standard amount of both gold and gems every time.
