Here's what i don't get... why buy a new one, what exactly can it add to actually justify making a whole new game out of? Outside of FIFA rule changes i don't see anything that couldn't be handled in a patch.

Yeah, I thought about that too. I guess a lot of it is just updating, and since the developers have made quite an excellent editor too, fans can in fact update the game indefinitely - proved they can be bothered to update the status of +20.000 players.
But new stuff is added too, such as the 3D engine's efficiency (which is so terrible in FM2010 that the game crashes every ten minutes with the 3D rendering activated).
