Disciples 3
Skill system is quite unlike that of homm.
You have sort of grid of skills, and you start out in center( at least for lambert (Godric ), I think it was in one of corners for Haarhus(Agrael - seriosuly they should have made thing less homm like, even if story isnt exactly alike there is too many parallels))
Some of them are quite minor like some extra stats, extra speed, while some are more worthy and make quite a differences. Each level you get like 3 skill points, but in essence main purpose of skills is to get to each corner and get extra leadership mark, so in the end it doesnt really matter that much asides from which skills to pick first.

The skill system would have been better if it had actual skills instead of mostly "+X to stat Y" stuff.
And it's kinda sad that they only got 1 undead unit right so far:

Their art style isn't bad, but they really should have kept the designs a bit closer to Disciples 2's.

Actually the consensus is that in it's current state the game is too bugged to be enjoyable. Wait for more patches...

I would say that Russian version after patch 1,06 became quite stable.
Problem with game is more in its gameplay since it simply doesnt have the same feel in my opinion. Also it retains very little from its predecessor in terms of story line.
As for art must agree, artist is very talented(and if i am correct hes quite popular in russia) but it retains little of original style.
What pissed me of most was constant spawning armies of enemy that simply scaled with my hero.

This is going to sound superficial (and a bit dumb), but if you liked Heroes V (yes, that's not a typo) then definitely go for it.Deadguy118 wrote:So the general consensus is that the game is a disappointment? Because it just came out on steam today and I was considering buying it because I liked the second game quite a bit.

Is that something like the Sphere grid from Final Fantasy X?tress wrote:Skill system is quite unlike that of homm.

The reason you're saying that is because the Russian version was even more bugged.tress wrote:I would say that Russian version after patch 1,06 became quite stable.
The game still freezes (at least for win7x64) and has weird bugs like entering your capital to discover it's the wrong race capital etc. Just look at this thread: http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread.php?tid=5098
Meh, the backstory was ruined by Rise of the Elves anyway... and ever since they announced the change to the battlefield i was expecting the feel of the combat to change too much.tress wrote:Problem with game is more in its gameplay since it simply doesnt have the same feel in my opinion. If you do an image search on google, there are several good shots of the FFX grid in the first few hits, but it sounds like you've got the idea. At least for games with lots of abilities (as opposed to just primary stats), I really liked that growth model. (although in FFX, since I like to do everything at the time it is available, if possible, at the end of the game, almost avery character had every skill.)tress wrote:Never played FF but as much as i gathered about sphere grid then something like that.
Maybe you can move bit more easy around it but in general seems so.
Also it takes I think 2 levels (6points) to get to edge of it.

Well...I broke down last week & purchased Disciples 3. It was a mess until they came out with a patch this past Friday. I must admit it's growing on me. Combat is very similar to HoMM series, it's works in it's own way. Still buggy, but it's getting better. I loved Disciples 1 & 2 & I feel the 3rd installment has it's place. Bought my copy @ Gamestop. NewEgg sells the game as well. Check it out!

Well, I got the demo for D3, and it turns out that the skill system is almost identical to the "license" system of Final Fantasy XII- although a slightly simplified version of it. Check here for a brief description and an image from FFXII.

Actually, I've generally liked the character development systems that Square-Enix has come up with in the FF games. They are usually quite different, which is always refreshing. It is one thing I like about D3- much better than the way D2 handled new skills. At least here you have a way to aim for specific skills (e.g.: I want more overland movement, and there is a +3 movement skill 4 spaces away. Now I know where to go- and I'll get the skill in 2 levels. Now which path is the best one to use...?)ThunderTitan wrote:So it's the japanese's fault yet again...
Keep in mind that my computer is around 6 years old now, but other than transitions to/from the hero/town screens it ran pretty smoothly. The overland movement was a bit slow- but there was also no control to adjust that speed (at least none I could find in the demo). There was a combat animation speed control, and when I set that to a faster level, combats were nice.BTW, how does the game run?
I definitely like the more tactical combat better.
Since the demo doesn't let you save/load (although there is an autosave active ) I probably won't play the other two factions in the demo. No obvious problems with the game. I think most D2 players will enjoy it- although the reduction to only 3 factions (from 5 in D2) may be a turn-off.

Actually i was wondering if the full game is still too buggy to be played well, like it was last time i tried.

I didn't encounter any bugs in the demo. Not having played in any sort of beta test, I did't know what to look for in that respect.ThunderTitan wrote:Actually i was wondering if the full game is still too buggy to be played well, like it was last time i tried.

I have the time these days so I started to play the game, overall it's just like the second, but in 3D and with weak, really weak colouring (spell?). One thing that bothers me besides some of the other bugs (yes! It's a shame this game is still full of) is that I don't know how, if I can, equip some of the artifacts - boots, gloves, etc. It does not work with the equip button, it does not work with dragging, any idea? Do I need some specific skill or amount of points to equip these. Can somebody help me?

If it is like D1/D2, then there are specific skills for each type of artifact (which I really found annoying, since in D2 you only got a new skill every few levels- was it every other or every 3rd? I don't recall)parcaleste wrote:I have the time these days so I started to play the game, overall it's just like the second, but in 3D and with weak, really weak colouring (spell?). I know, I can't find such skills in the tree. The game allows some artifacts to be placed, but mostly not the ones I want to. I am starting to thing if there is something with the different types of heroes (Ranger, Knight, Magician), cause your starting hero is already having gloves and stuff which give bonuses.
Either way it's annoying there is nothing written about it in the game.
