If your graphics card is actually smoking it's dead or very near to it. I doubt it'll have very much life left it in at all. Even if the smoke wasn't anything important melting, those sort of temperatures have probably cracked something important.

As for what caused it? Have you overclocked it? Is the fan broken (most likely explanation to my mind)? Did you "accidentally" stick the computer in the oven :)? Is there an animal stuck in there (this honestly happened to a school computer, we had a fried mouse in the back of one of them!)? Otherwise I can't imagine what it is, except for a really bad manufacturing fault, but that wouldn't be it unless it was a new card probably because if it was gonna fail like that it would have done so pretty soon after you first turned it on.

Stop playing Heroes before ur card goes to hell.

Really, smoke coming out of ur computer is not a good thing, just in case you didin't figure it out. Also report it as a bug to Ubi/Nival. Hopefully it will be fixed in the final game.

This isn't a software bug. There isn't any software in the world that can cause an otherwise healthy graphics card to start smoking. Heroes will be using your graphics card which is why the problem is showing up while you're playing, but that's correlation not causation.

Yes there is - just the one.

I've never heard of a memory leak overtaxing the CPU - though it can sure give the hard drive a good thrashing.

nitroy2k, what other games did you use to check your graphics card? If they aren't modern 3D games then they won't give the GC a full work-out. But don't try any other games or you'll do permanent damage.

I'm surprised your PC is still working after the smoke 8| Did it smell like burning dust?
If you're lucky, all that's happened is a cable is touching a particularly hot part of the card, and what you smell is burnt plastic insulator. Anyhow, open up your PC and check that each fan has plenty of airspace round it.

Best way to go is to report it to Ubi/Nival. And not play H5beta again.

words i recived on other forum ...
I have the ATI X800 XT and while I was playing my catalyst control center warned me that my graphic card temperature was reaching a very high level. I didn't pay attention at first but it was doing that everytime I was playing heroes for a while.
I know now that there is an issue with this game.
Hopefully they'll correct this problem for the final version 'cause I intend to spend many hours on this game, that's for sure!

Man, this is some nasty stuff going on. You both had great VGA cards, listen to this. I'm playing H5 BETA on Radeon 9000Pro, man that card is OLD, and I mean OLD, even NFS: Most Wanted is working crappy on it... And nothing happened to me. Maybe the problem with the game is that it doesn't like those cards that can measure it's heat level. :P Anyway, you have serious problem, I never heard of something like this before. And I thought Heroes 5 will have something against my computer... :|

Only older hardware, yeah? It's the same with bios melting, some viruses can melt older viruses but it won't work on modern ones to my knowledge. And you need a reasonably modern system to run H5, so I'm pretty sure it can't be a software issue...

And yet running said software does cause the problem.

And isn't overclocking done by software?

Like I said, correlation not causation. The game will be using the graphics card in a way which it otherwise isn't being used, but that doesn't mean it's causing the problem, it's just revealing the hardware fault.

Good point. At least some overclocking is done without hardware modification, but I don't know enough about this to know if it could be maliciously exploited. Don't you need to be fiddling around in the bios? But heroes 5 isn't going to be surreptisiously overclocking your graphics card :).

Not that crap again. Might as well go "I'm sorry for putting onions in ur lunch, but it's ur fault for being alergic" (just watched Desperate Housewives at 3 a.m.) :what: . You can't change the hardware as easily as the software.

No but it could be doing something that might cause erors that might make ur card go screwy. And if you serh around most sites say that viruses and software can't directly destroy hardware. But i doubt all fried hardware gets that way because u didn't used a grounded socket.
