HOMM Clone - Need a programmer and some artists
HOMM Clone - Need a programmer and some artists
Hey,
I'm new here, to this forum. I found it while I was searching for HOMM clones on google. I decided to join.
I am currently working on a HOMM clone (I usually finnish what I start, don't worry), but to actually make it fun, I need another programmer (mainly because I'm not the worlds best programmer, and because I've run into a problem), and a couple of sprite artists.
Each unit will need at least 30 sprites, and I am planning on having at least 50 different units, and frankly, I don't feel like doing 1700 sprites by myself .
I saw another thread about a project that probably died, and I thought I'd post this thread as a kind of... replacement, so that people know that there actually will be a real (and good) HOMM clone, eventually. I will finnish it by myself if I have to, but that would probably take years.
I do this because HOMM is the greatest game EVER, and I really really want a new HOMM game, but with the HOMM1-3 feel to it (not HOMM4 or 5, which is actually boring imho). And I also do this for all the fans of the HOMM series. I know people would appreciate a new HOMM game, with the classical, HOMM-ish feel to it, and not a game that concentrate on graphics and or roleplaying, instead of the actual elements that made the first three games so successful and fun.
What I have done so far is:
- planned the whole thing (what kind of castles etc there should be, and new rules that might be added to the game, so that the game would be more original, but still as fun as the first 3 games)
- started on a game engine (the game engine can only render two layers at the moment, the terrain, and the GUI/mouse).
- started on a menu-system (which will resemble alot to the old HOMM-like menues - am I the only one that actually think the GUI is important?)
- started on a sprite template, one for hourse-based sprites, so that sprite artists has something to start working from (I know it makes the job much easier)
- started on a map editor (I will try to make it as flexible as possible)
- started on the music that it will be using (I am a experienced composer, with access to a whole orchestra, so it won't be a problem)
Why I need help programming the whole thing is because I am not a programmer first hand, but a music composer and a decent sprite artist.
If someone decides to help me with the programming, here's what you need to know:
- I am using the programming laungage Blitz3D, because I that good of a programmer, and it makes the programming a whole lot easier (plus, the programming language takes about a day or two to learn properly)
- I haven't done that much 2d programming before, so it is kind of new to me, but I understand the concept, and how it works, with layers etc
- I have ran into a problem. When only drawing two layers, the terrain and the gui, I have 50 fps, but when trying to add another layer (which would be the heroes etc), I get 15-20 fps. I am probably doing it wrong. This is why I need help with this.
If anyone wants a copy of the game so far (which isn't much, but probably enough to get people interrested in helping me), or is interrested in helping me with the project, email me at antonberlin@gmail.com or add my msn: annas_alskling@hotmail.com.
And oh yeah, I almost forgot. The game is called Broken Alliance: The Heroes of the Lost Lands. (I wonder where I got that idea from )
Regards,
Anton, aka Orias

Re: HOMM Clone - Need a programmer and some artists
Yes, as far as I remember here are two dead projects on an old round table.
- whatabout AI?
- you will probably need more programmers first...
- it will be game open for modifications? (btw that's original purpose of WoG)
- it will be open source?
I'm not programmer and with my limited time I'm afraid that I cannot help, but it sounds very interesting. Maybe we will see some more discussion below

The differense between this project, and other projects, is probably that people never finnish what they start, but I always do, no matter what. If I put my mind to it, I get it done.
I have all the programming experience needed to actually do everything, but I will still need help, if we want this to be as good as it can get. My original thought was just to have another HOMM game, so I don't mind it turning out like that, but something new and interresting would be nice too.
I hope there will be some programmers interrested in helping me. I have posted threads on some forums now to really see if there are any programmers and sprite artists that would like to work on this project, so I guess I will get a team ready in time.
The AI will be as good as it can get. I will try to simulate as human reactions as possible, but it shouldn't be too good either (that will probably be determened by a difficulty setting or something). I know how important AI is, so I, and hopefully others, will really take time to try to make it as good as possible.
I will try to make it mod-friendly, but you will have to have the source code to change some things, as I don't have ALL the time in the world, to make a whole game by myself. But at least, I'll try
And yes, it will be open source. I am a musician too, as I mensioned in the last post, and I don't even want a record company for my music, even though I can get one, because I don't want to SELL it. I want to give it away. Art should be free, and programming is a form of art too. Everything should be free
Okay, maybe you cannot help me, but maybe you know someone who can? If so, please check with them. I really need some support here, to make it a great game, that will hopefully be much better than HOMM4
Btw, I never got WoG working. Every time I tried to run the game after installing WoG, nothing happens. I execute the exefile, and all that happens is that the screen turn black for half a second or something. If you know how I can fix that problem, please let me know

I will see. But I don't know about any free programmer atm. (They are hard to get, especially game programmers, I think you can imagine that)
And as to the matter of WoG, check if you had install at least small intro video - it's necessary - game will not run without it returning blank screen and erm error output window.

I will try that, thanks.
And yeah, I know programmers are hard to get. I will probably manage to make the game engine by myself, but it most likely won't be that mod-friendly if that is the case, because I don't think I can manage to do that by myself.
I will check on the Blitz3D forum though, and see if there is anyone interrested in helping me with the programming. It might become better that most of you think

Typically game programmers like to see some screenshots of a basic engine running before they join a project. At the very least they want to see a thorough and well thought out design document detailing all aspects of the game and engine.
There are many game projects that get started, but are never finished as such most people are skeptical about joining them unless the project has some substance to it, like a demo or design document.
I would suggest that you think through all aspects of your game and compile all those thoughts into a design document. Not only will it lend credit to your project, but you will find the design document invaluable as you move forward with the project. The document will help you spot any problems with the design early on, saving you from having to rewrite the game engine down the line.

I'll do that. Thanks I can get you some screenshots too, if needed. But I have nowhere to host them, so I will give them to those interrested by email, or via AIM/MSN. My email is antonberlin@gmail.com. My msn is annas_alskling@hotmail.com, my AIM is q3Orias.protecyon wrote:Typically game programmers like to see some screenshots of a basic engine running before they join a project. For example you may use imageshack.us, and btw for full control over your images is recommended to register here. (Of course, that this service is free...)orias wrote: But I have nowhere to host them...
Just a security note, it's always better to use something like yourmail[at]mail[dot]com

Looking good
It seems to me that this is one of the more promising Heroes projects going on. You've made your own website, which seems fairly professional, and the screen shots look good for this stage of development. The music is good, too. The only weak point seems to be the storyline, as it seems to be a bit cliché, but I'm sure you can get some help with that too (if you want it, of course).
As for me, I don't know the first thing about programming or graphics, but I'll try to support you with helpful comments!
I'm looking forward to updates on your project!

purchase option
I wonder if it would be possible to actually buy the rights to the Heroes I, II, III versions? Then, it would be much easier to modify from that base.
Does Ubisoft own the rights to the earlier versions as well?
