I'm new here, to this forum. I found it while I was searching for HOMM clones on google. I decided to join.
I am currently working on a HOMM clone (I usually finnish what I start, don't worry), but to actually make it fun, I need another programmer (mainly because I'm not the worlds best programmer, and because I've run into a problem), and a couple of sprite artists.
Each unit will need at least 30 sprites, and I am planning on having at least 50 different units, and frankly, I don't feel like doing 1700 sprites by myself

I saw another thread about a project that probably died, and I thought I'd post this thread as a kind of... replacement, so that people know that there actually will be a real (and good) HOMM clone, eventually. I will finnish it by myself if I have to, but that would probably take years.
I do this because HOMM is the greatest game EVER, and I really really want a new HOMM game, but with the HOMM1-3 feel to it (not HOMM4 or 5, which is actually boring imho). And I also do this for all the fans of the HOMM series. I know people would appreciate a new HOMM game, with the classical, HOMM-ish feel to it, and not a game that concentrate on graphics and or roleplaying, instead of the actual elements that made the first three games so successful and fun.
What I have done so far is:
- planned the whole thing (what kind of castles etc there should be, and new rules that might be added to the game, so that the game would be more original, but still as fun as the first 3 games)
- started on a game engine (the game engine can only render two layers at the moment, the terrain, and the GUI/mouse).
- started on a menu-system (which will resemble alot to the old HOMM-like menues - am I the only one that actually think the GUI is important?)
- started on a sprite template, one for hourse-based sprites, so that sprite artists has something to start working from (I know it makes the job much easier)
- started on a map editor (I will try to make it as flexible as possible)
- started on the music that it will be using (I am a experienced composer, with access to a whole orchestra, so it won't be a problem)
Why I need help programming the whole thing is because I am not a programmer first hand, but a music composer and a decent sprite artist.
If someone decides to help me with the programming, here's what you need to know:
- I am using the programming laungage Blitz3D, because I that good of a programmer, and it makes the programming a whole lot easier (plus, the programming language takes about a day or two to learn properly)
- I haven't done that much 2d programming before, so it is kind of new to me, but I understand the concept, and how it works, with layers etc
- I have ran into a problem. When only drawing two layers, the terrain and the gui, I have 50 fps, but when trying to add another layer (which would be the heroes etc), I get 15-20 fps. I am probably doing it wrong. This is why I need help with this.
If anyone wants a copy of the game so far (which isn't much, but probably enough to get people interrested in helping me), or is interrested in helping me with the project, email me at antonberlin@gmail.com or add my msn: annas_alskling@hotmail.com.
And oh yeah, I almost forgot. The game is called Broken Alliance: The Heroes of the Lost Lands. (I wonder where I got that idea from
