Oh come on. The moderators would never close a thread for an arbitrary reason like that.

Indeed here is something odd on long threads, especially when I'm reading someone remarks... - it's coming to the conclusion why?

Ok, I know I come from a different generation then most here. Some I am younger then, most I am older then. Today I seen something rather comical, and rather sad.

I was at a wedding of one of my second cousins (I hate weddings though), and happen to overhear a conversation. One of the people there (some relative I guess, but if so a distant one), a young girl, was showing off her latest gadget. A blackberry. Expensive toy that, but I digress. When asked how she got her parents to buy it she replied "I like threatened to run away and junk. They like folded faster then like a cheap chair or something."

Now if I had tried to play that game with my parents..my dad would have offered me 20 bucks to live on and my mom would have packed my suitcase. In fact, they did exactly that when my older brother threatened to run away. Mom brought out all of his junk, packed in two suitcases, my dad handed him a twenty and said "Good luck." That was it. It lasted a whole two hours and my brother was back asking to be let in. (The one I call CW btw). Of course this was after it got to the point where 'corporal punishment' could get your kids taken away. Before that my dad would have just 'tanned my hide' and sent me to my room (ok so he would have had mom do it but same difference). They didn't play games.

Now it is a bit harder. You spank them, children service takes them away. You let them run away, it is child endangerment. You cave in, they walk all over you. Its a catch 222 (worse then a catch 22). Like most things it has gotten way out of proportion. I had my hide 'tanned' a lot of times and I am not a serial killer (though I am a cereal one, just ask froot loops). Granted I am a bit chaotic, forgetful, and confusing, but those can be good qualities also. Anybody out there ever try something like this before? Any parents out there had to deal with it? If so how? Just curious.

I'm not a parent... yet... but I would say that you are right.
Modern society these days tends to over-react about certain things that were true from the begining of time and children grew up without any problem.

And I think this is just one example of how wrong our present society is getting. I believe the further we go with this non-sense that is against nature and against millenia of wisdom, the more the chances that our society fails grow.

I heard a fact the other day that made me sick... In France, in order to predict juvenile delincquency, kindergarden teachers observe and spot hyperactive children. In fact each child is being supervised and has a file... it's worse than a criminal. But the interesting part is to come. When a child is found hyperactive, and furthermore is suspected to come from a socially poor environement, he is prescribed inhibition pills. Parents who refuse to accept the administration of pills to their children risk to have their child expeled from that kindergarden.
And all that in order to prevent adolescent vagabondism.
Can anyone else living in France can confirm this rumor, since I heard it from someone and did not check it

Now tell me if this isn't fucked-up? Soon we will all be "on the pill" for some reason.

back on topic:

children who see that they can "blackmail" their parents into doing anything for them, will become some spoiled brats, imo, and they will have a harder time once they realise that life is not just mommy and daddy.

Furthermore, releasing this type of character in society circles can without a doubt harm the quality of people in that place. I mean who likes self-centered, egotistic, spoiled people. If they will have a poor position in the place they go(unlikely) they will be cast-outs. On the contrary, more probably they will have a good social position and further contribute to the downgrading of our moral values, as it is curently happening.

Unfortunately, this cannot be changed. I mean we cannot prevent this from happening since it got out of hand. If the people that made these rules(like taking the children away just for a slap, etc) did not realise what they were doing and we started on this trail, it is hard to return to a better path. If you want my opinion I would say those were just some frustrated idiots that probably blamed their parents for their sexual failures.

But I disgress too much...

It's the old saying... give them an inch and they will take a mile.

I'm not saying that spanking should be compulsory, but I often wonder how actions in one's youth by parents and society has caused so many people to become _____ as adults.

It's a slippery Cause and Effect slope...

Parents don't spank their children as babies
Babies do not fear repercussions for dangerous or naughty behaviour

Parents reward good behavior but do not punish for bad behavior
Children do not learn that consequences follow bad behaviour

Parents can't threaten their children so they have a compromised authority.
Children do not respect their parents or elders.

Schools don't give grades or have as many organized competitions
Students are satisfied with generic effort and do not excel to be the best

The softening of the youth has been happening for the past few generations - I definitely could have used a stronger discipline in my life. My mom grew up in the hippy generation and although I love them very much and would not trade the parents I have for anything, there is a part of me that wishes they had down a better job creating boundaries for me when I was young.

I still have trouble creating my own as an adult.

C'mon, that's just retarded. It should only be a problem if it leaves nasty marks.

I don't think spanking is necessary for that, or that it really helps if you don't make the child understand why it's a bad thing. Plenty of times when being spanked only made me more careful the next time i did the "bad" thing (which was bad mostly cause it could get hurt). Oh, and one of my proudest moments in childhood was when i broke 2 wooden spoons (făcăleţe) in 3 days on my behind, was my grandma pissed or what. :Ddon't worry, it's alot less painful then it sounds, i actually barely felt the blow when they broke, both times

Now one of my classmates from highschool told me that her parents never touched her, but when she did something wrong they would make her feel guilty by just looking at her. IMO it seemed to work better.

That summarizes this discussion :D. A balance is necessary, because if you over-discipline your children, you are going to cripple them emotionally. If you under-discipline your children, they'll walk all over you, as Mytical said.

That's why I don't plan on starting a family in a long time. ;)
(What we plan and what we end up doing are two different things though).
