I know how you feel K, I got started on this sucker a few weeks ago and it's a killer, went for a Earth scenario (after and initial play around - missed civ III and it's been a looonnngggg time) and whupping some ass! way in front in the tech stakes, I have to say though that waging war is appropriately difficult in such a large map!
Human madness is the howl of a child with a shattered heart.

There's also the huge modding comunity that you can always turn to if you want some more variety in the game. The best mod for CIV out there is, IMO, Fall from Heaven 2. Currently it's at 0.016j, but even at this early version it transforms the game into something very different.
The beta for Fall from Heaven 2 FIRE will be out on Friday.

Indeed Everyone has their tastes. I'm a sucker for fantasy, that's why I keep talking about FfH whenever I hear about CIV. I had a good and fun time with vanilla for quite some time, but then boredom came along and I needed a change.
There are lots of realistic mods out there too. Just check the Mod Development subforum on CivFanatics and you'll see.

As I said somewhere up yonder, Amra has a great mod that adds a bunch of new civs, leaderheads, wonders, and resources -- but leaves gameplay unchanged. If you fancy growing coffee or playing as Conan the Cimmerian (Fin/Agg), this is the mod for you.
I finally found Warlords on sale, and so far so good. I'm still learning the new rules, but look forward to the scenarios.

Before you criticize someone, first walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you'll be a mile away. And you'll have their shoes.
