GameSpy kicks off the annual recapitulation period with its PC Game awards. A Heroes game, Company of Heroes, is both the real-time strategy game and the game of the year. Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords beat Heroes of Might and Magic V in the Turn-Based Strategy category, while Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -- Dark Crusade is crowned the best expansion. Heroes V and Dark Messiah were ignored for the Best Music award, perhaps the category where they had the best chances. The biggest disappointment was Gothic 3. GameSpy notes that 2006 has been a great year for strategy games and their expansions, but blame the publishers for the quiet policy of "release now, patch immediately" that now plagues both the PC and the consoles.
