It's the difference between honesty and dishonesty. Normal marketing doesn't lie, in the sense that it's open about its biases and purposes. Thus you can discount the weight you place on the opinion accordingly (ie ignore it).

In this someone is consciously lying to you, perhaps over a good period of time, in the hope of creating a false impression of an independent recommendation. That's not cool in my book but, like I said before, maybe people don't have a problem with lying for money any more? I find that weird but maybe I'm just a 23yo fogey :).

Did you read what I said? " Normal marketing doesn't lie, in the sense that it's open about its biases and purposes." I didn't say it didn't mislead people I just said it's open about it.

Quit attacking/laughing straw men :).

PS. here's what I think of modern marketing.

Marketing in movies: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=i_robot

And marketing x-treme: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net ... e_bullshit

And a famous quote:
- But,your highness,shes a commoner.Her slurm will taste foul.
- Yes!And well market it as the new slurm. Then, when everybody hates it,we will release slurm classic! We will earn billions!
So,out of these four things, which one is worse:Hiring someone to yell "tis da stuff" on forums,"subtilely" advertising your product in a movie, repackaging your product and labeling it x-treme(and increasing its price,of course),or releasing a bad "new" product,so that the old one can be sold better when its rereleased?Four marketing strategies, all four very common.Which one do you think is the sleaziest?

I inserted numbers, they're my order. I think #1 is very dodgy, #2 is slightly dodgy and #3 and #4 little more than annoying. And I don't think #4 is common or even has definitely happened, despite it being a post hoc justification for the New Coke fiasco (based on no evidence).

Mod note: Fixed the link. GC

Only because it's common knowledge. When you see a comercial you expext it to be misleading, coz you're used to it.
