As I was posting this question my wife read through the manual a bit and figured out the answer.
One part of the MM6 UI that was driving me crazy was the question of how
to use these raise dead, resurrection, and stone to flesh scrolls. Whenever I'd hold one over the face of a character and right click I'd get the maddeningly obvious feedback: "That character is {dead|eradicated|stoned}!"
DUH!
Anyway, while I was typing this and demonstrating the problem to my wife she picked up the manual and helpfully suggested the right answer (basically pick up said scroll, "drop it" on the full body portrait of any living character and then use the resulting crosshairs to select the dead, eradicated or stoned character's face.
So I'm just posting this in case anyone else totally misses that in the manual.
BTW: I found a "Deck of Chance" by the entrance of the Lair of the Wolf tonight. I hadn't seen any reference to those in any of the online "cheat" guides or hints sites. it was up on the hill, so I had to climb a bit to find it (but my expert/master level Wizard Eye was showing something up there that looked interested ... or I would never have found it).
MMVI: Using Scrolls: Raise Dead, Resurrect, Stone to Flesh??

IIRC Decks of Fate give a certain bonus to the character who uses it, depending on what month and day is. The later is the month, the higher will be the bonus (possibly higher each new week), each new month another bonus. IIRC this bonus was one of the 7 attributes and resistances. However, they are really rare - I usually find 2-3 of them during the whole game.
In MM7 they (developers) improved Decks of Fate in shape of Genie Lamps, which give also skill points, experience and also food, might be something else as well. And they were a lot easier to be found as well.

Speaking of lamps (and gems) ...
Is there anything you can do with those silly little "magic lamps" (MM6) other than trade them for gems out in the Dragon Sands?
For that matter, is there anything you can do with gems other than sell them or cast "golden touch" on them? Where would be the best place for a master merchant to sell them? (master of light magic gets 80% of value on golden touch --- which seems to be the best deal I can find for most stuff).
