M&M VII Stealing and cubes help?

Hi all,
I have played this game through befor, and decieded to play it through again with diffrent characters, im useing a thief this time and have him at stealing Master level, and this is going to sound really silly but i dont have any idea how to attempt to steal! I have been in many a shop but just cant figure out how you do it, i dont need to steal i have plenty of gold just want to try it out.

Also my other problem is that last time i was forced to play out the game on the dark side, you know the mission you get from ether side to go kill somone and get that controle cube?
Well when i chose the light side and went to kill the guy in the pit he didnt have it, i tried reloading sevral times, evry time i used magic to see if he had it, it said he did, yet when i killed him and went to get it the body was bare, any surgestions as i would like to try and compleat it on light side this time?

A while since i played with a thief. IMO you simply had to have your thief selected and then click on the item you want to steal. To steal from monsters/NPCs you had to get close to them and click on them. BTW, you should be able to steal the control cube from the dude as well.
The body is empty? Are you sure the cube was not placed into your inventory without any notice? Do not remember any bugs with it.
