Help with editor

Unread postby soupnazii » 24 Sep 2006, 16:43

alright, maybe im just a little slow, but i have a problem:

im pretty familiar with Heroes map editors, and dont usually have too much trouble with them. I've been playing around with the new one for a while now, and have gone through most of the practical and theoretical guides (I've even started making a small map). but i have one MAJOR problem: i have no way of selecting objects. usually in the old editors there was a button on the panel that looked like a plain mouse or something, and when you clicked it the mouse would clear and you would have a selecting tool. now, there is no such button and to get a selcting tool i have to switch to a tab other than the "objects" tab and then back again (so there is no object or tile on the mouse). is here any other way of doing this? maybe i missed something? as far as i know, no topics were made about this, and its really pissing me off. any help would be appriciated.

p.s.
also, does anyone know if there is an "undo" function? control+z doesnt do anything.

I believe that Paradox wrote a mini tutorial on the map editor at the Elrath site. At least it was there when I saw the beta leak.

When you place an object and don't want to immediately place another object of the same type hit 'escape' to get the object off your cursor.

Now click on the object you want to edit. Hit the space bar. The property window will come up and you are good to go.

Edit: Please post your mapmaking questions in the Mapmaking Guild forum so we can consolidate them all in one place.

And to add in, I don't believe there's an undo function, so save frequently. That's what I've been doing at least.

To select an object for editing or whatever, you must right click on the object and when it turns completely red hit your spacebar for the properties to come up. I also found that using the left mouse button also worked. I found a list of keyboard instructions in the editor documentation folder under HommV_Editor Theory.pdf (chapter 4) Hope you find this to be useful. I don't think this editor is as user friendly as the others. I wish there were scroll bars so you can scan the map and choose objects.

Besides the shortcuts there are also icons on the top menue that are useful.

I am almost ready to playtest my "too big for you" map. After many hours of working with the editor it has grown on me. I do wish there was an undo button and a way to make your own object brushes. Drop down menues like the HOMM4 editor would have been nice, but oh well.

The terraforming ability of the editor is really extraordinary. The scripting can let you do most of the things that the HOMM4 editor can do (no combat scripting for the human player though:( ) and some things that can't be done in the HOMM4 editor (or that I never figured out how to do anyways.

So, overall I'm quite happy with the editor. I haven't done any programing in a number of years, but by reading about LUA on the website, going through the tutorials, asking questions here, and experimenting, I am learning how to do quite a lot with it.

So if you are discouraged, I encourage you to read all the mapmaking guild threads (particularly the troubleshooting thread) and to ask questions how to do what you want to do.
