Quake
I just gave a run at QIV demo and Im pleasantly surprised. Those guys seem to be smart.I think Ill give the full game a run soon.
I loved the previous parts.Such a great atmosphere. And I still enjoy playing the QIII with some of my friends.A very fast shooter with a nice atmosphere.A great doom successor.

Heh, always loved the Quake series too. Still think Quake I was the best though. Team Fortress that was modded from Quake became a world obsessions (my classmates played it ALL the time).
I really liked the campaign too. It was FAST and challenging. Sitting around and trying to aim for the head like in Goldeneye 007 was like wearing a sign saying "please shoot me".
Heh, stood still and tried to take out an ogre and he throwed a grenade at me so it was gameover.
Sadly, I've never played the mission packs for any Quake game
Quake II was a different type of game with no relevance to the first one. Actually it's was so different that it should have been called something else.
It was slow and futuristic and my classmates hated it. Continued to play Quake I.
Quake III took the franschise back to it's roots with a vengeance! This baby I've played alot both on the net and in singleplayer. For some strange reason I seem to prefer all types of games in singleplayer instead of multiplayer even when they're meant to be played in multiplayer.
I NEVER got tired of fighting Klesk on his own lvl *praises the Railgun*. When I was really good I beated him fairly easy on Hardcore but almost always fell down in the lava....but Nightmare was a totally differnt story....I absolutely hated Railgun specialists on Nightmare....They missed so seldomly that I knew I would die quickly. And talking about Railgun specialists....Xaero was laughably hard....first time I fought him it was on hardcore I just started laughing since he won like nothing....wondered how the hell I was ever going to win against him since he NEVER misses!
....On Nightmare I didn't even had to try....two rails = dead Campaigner.
Quake IV I've had since release but I'm not gonna play it until I upgrade my computer with Conroe (I always play with every graphic detail maxed).
psst: You know what Conroe is? (Without looking it up?)

I played and completed all first 3 Quakes...
Quake I was pretty fun, especially with the Tenebrae graphical engine (Looks like Q4!). It took me about an hour to figure out how to beat the final boss
Quake II was... awesome. I was the first registered player to win the game without dying once
I also played a lot mods like Dday (WW2, with realistic damage and aiming, great mod!) or Qwar (A Real Time Strategy mod where you command the strogg from a top down perspective!). Graphical engines like Q2Max made things even better.
Quake III was... boring. I beat the "single player campaign", which was just a series of deathmatch stages against bots. Sure, it's good multiplayer action, but this shouldn't be named "quake 3 Arena", just "Quake Arena" would fit better.
Quake IV (Just played the demo) was... crap. I mean, It's Doom 3 but with more enemies, the strogg weren't those scary flesh-covered killing machines, they're just dumb, useless critters running around.
Every weapon sounds like "click"... the blaster, the machinegun, the railgun... curse the sound engineer who made those!
The multiplayer had exactly the same feel as Q3A, which was good.
As you see, Q2 is my fav! Long live Q2!

Quake I was simply groundbreaking; the best gameplay belonged to Duke Nukem 3d (hail to the king baby!
) around that time, but when quake came there was little doubt that it was time for a revolution in shooters not another evolution.. It was gory, scary, and ugly to be honest but it had a perfect combination of those, and a small taste of what is to come..
Quake II was the best in my book, not because it's linear campaign which was very good, but because its music. Nine Inch Nails (the lovely nailgun takes its name from NIN) did a great job in the original Quake, but this one had very atmospheric pieces, all made by Sonic Mayhem.. I especially remember the fourth track, The Quad Machine being simply brilliant, one of the top 50 tracks of computer game music history.. Coming from a guy who worked for its competition, both in level and sound design, this is good praise for Quake series..
The third was bit of a letdown, I agree, fun but out of place.. The final boss was a little hard in the hardest difficulty but if you were patient, he wasn't unbeatable...
The fourth couldn't meet my expectations unfortunately... It had a good campaign, a fair AI, great visuals, and the mighty flashlight, but it didn't have the character of the first two games...

I don't 'create' games myself of course, but I work in the teams that create games, yeah... Started about 10-11 years ago, worked as a level and/or sound designer/composer for years.. Gotta admit, a pretty weird combination but that's what I do; at least what I used to do as a job, now it's more like a hobby because of the crap my hands are now full of..Campaigner wrote:You create PC games?cornellian wrote:Coming from a guy who worked for its competition, both in level and sound design, this is good praise for Quake series..
I'm surprised to see so many liking Quake II the best. My classmates hated it but many younger people loved it. Strange....

Composing does take an enormous amount of time, you're right Stefan; but once you streamline things, it becomes a much faster process.. Besides, I'd had ample time in the good ol' days when my hands were crap-free

Well,I just played QIV a bit.Actually Im near the end(I know that because I have 7 weapons out of 10).
MAJOR SPOILERS
Well,as someone said, this sure isnt QII.Sure, its bloody, and it has body parts, but the enemies arent the half human, half something disgusting anymore. They are just machines. And the bodies disappear.which leaves no room for thorough investigation
But,I must admit one thing about the game:Quake 4 is disgusting!Like I said, its not the enemies.Nor is it the body parts and blood everywhere(doomIII has more of those, yet it somehow just isnt it). No,its the part where you get turned into a strogg. You being strapped in a chair, watching the guy in front of you get drilled, screaming and kicking, and then your turn comes.Ugh!
I wonder when has it become a must for the main character to be captured, then miraculously rescued/escapes?Though the best escape was in AVP,when the predator(you)escapes because the alien(again you)causes havoc. But this escape was very nice as well.
Aside from that short sequence, the rest of the game isn anything special.Lame weapons, seen thousands of times before.A few interesting vehicles, that you ride just once(thank god for that, because they would become quite boring otherwise).A bit smarter enemies in the begining that turn out to be dumb as always, just a bit more dancy(
Dont ask, just poped in my mind).
Overal,the game deserves a 6.Not more.

CS and pubs! Pubs and CS! I cannot understand what you're saying, my brain simply doesn't register such two very far away concepts together, did you mean CS and library, library and CSstefan.urlus wrote:I would imagine so.
My CS course was a breeze (and i spent a good deal of the time at the pub as well) but this was 7 years ago, and things have probably changed - not to mention that you are studying in the US and I did my time here (which is in Western Australia, if you didn't know)

Actually things haven't changed, when I got my BS in another university everything was fine, but the problem is in the college, this one. These guys are paranoid enough to pride themselves in being the second hardest (not necessarily second best) engineering education in the world! I mean, who with a right mind does this?:D
By the way are you in Perth? (it's the only city I know to be in WAustralia, my geography isn't the best)
Kinda gets old doesn't it? Though it pretty much was the standard, even in the old days.. It was the lifesaver of developers that wanted to introduce the games weapons before too long, but didn't want to make the game too easy afterwards.. What was the first game that had this 'innovation', I can't really say, not with my hazy memory; but unless I'm mistaken, the first 'real escape' that you got to commit was with (then) Commander Kyle Katarn, who deserves a thread on his own...DaemianLucifer wrote: I wonder when has it become a must for the main character to be captured, then miraculously rescued/escapes?

SPOILER WARNING
Dark matter gun?
They arent even trying. While were witnesed such a cool thing as a gravity gun,and soon a portal gun, this one is quite a disappointment.
And while you get turned into some meak stroggling, your fellow humans become these uberstrogg, packing masive rocket launchers, hovering around, having extremly resistant shields, and what not.Its just not fair. But considering that all the strogg you meet where humans,it makes you wonder what the original race looked like.
All the new FPSs are so linear, and closed.Claustrophobic.A few years back there was a game by the name of serious sam.Though it has even less story than quake,it has massive levels. And I mean really massive!Stretching for miles(literally)in all directions.I guess theyll never learn.*sigh*!

Serious Sam was old school fps, like Doom, where you aren't bogged with a story but with countless monsters. SS was a little over the top in the monster count though, I remember a boss fight (in the first one I believe) where I didn't take my finger from fire for minutes (literally), just kept changing weapons and collecting ammo that respawned over and over again (along with the minions of the boss)...
UT2004 has some huge maps too - in onslaught mode
our CS course was pretty good, but probably not the hardest, and that's why i spent a LOT of time at the pub
Yes I am, it is the only real city of note in Western Australia, I'm somewhat pleased you know that at all, it's a nice place to live, but tends to be a bit on the quiet side (only about 1.5 million in the whole metro area)By the way are you in Perth?
