SecuROM removed or wasn't there to begin with?

Unread postby Sikon » 28 Jul 2006, 16:28

Well, as of 1.2, Heroes V still needs the disk. However, there appears to be absolutely no copy protection involved. For maximum guarantee, I copied the files from the Russian DVD and burned them to a DVD-RW using K3b (setting the label to "H5DVD"). To my surprise, the game (when launched under Cedega) still recognized the DVD.

In Windows, so far I only tried mounting the image using DAEMON Tools while leaving all the copy protection options unchecked, and it also worked.

So, can we celebrate a small, but relieving victory of humanity against Digital Restrictions Management?

Certain groups discovered it wasn't there to begin with soon after the game's release.

well that blows that theory out the water, i think it's better that it never had it in the first place, now if only we could find out if this was across all versions (regions) of the game, not just the russian one

Starforce on the russian version was pulled much later than in other regions which is presumably the reason why it ended up with no extra protection.

So who has it still (SecuRom) and who doesnt? I'm running European collectors edition and it's still there.

As it is still "there" on my copy, you are wrong. With my original copy, occassionally it doesnt work something to the effect of: "SecuRom has failed to recognise this as the original disk" but works when you try again or again.

As far as I know, only the russian version, distributed by Nival, is without any third party copy protection.
