Spellforce

Unread postby ThunderTitan » 17 Jun 2006, 22:02

Haven't played the first one more then 15 min (weak PC, not impresed enough), but I am playing the second one. Not a bad game, but not exactly my thing. I'll probably just finish the campaign and leave it at that.

How about YOU. What is your opinion of the series?

Ive played just the original.I remember I wanted to play the sequels, but didnt have the means(read:money). Now that I have the means,I wonder wheter to search for the expansions or to go to part two.

Anyway,I liked the RPG/RTS bland. It was nicely done.Although they sacrificed some story and quests for this. The graphics was marvelous.A stunning 3D(nival could learn a bit from this game). The intro sequence was stunning. The units, the towers, the spells, the enviroment...The AI in this game is marvelous as well.I remember there were quite a few maps that I had to restart because the AI overwhelemd me.It doesnt wait for you to develop your defences before it starts ammasing its army.It starts building it the second you enter the map,and sends wave after an increasing wave at you.

The story was good too,but some quests were pretty dissapointing. The races were done quite well. And the ending is very phylosophical, although the outro is a bit too short.

So, did anyone finish #2? I'm at the map where the Patriarch falls to Sorvina. How much longer does it last?

And a gaming mag over here is offering #1 w/o expansion with it.

Spellforce 2 is a LOT better than Spellforce 1. I beat it a couple weeks ago and it was pretty enjoyable to the end. Plus it wasn't as frustrating as the 1st one when you got to the end. I never even beat the first game because I got so angry fighting endless armies on extremely limited resources.

So SFII lost the chalenge?Too bad...Why do the games always loose so much with sequels?Thief was hard as hell.thief 2 even harder, yet the third part was walk in a park.*sigh*!

I didn't say it lost the challange. It lost the endless spawning of the metal creatures which it made it almost unreasonably difficult towards the end of the game. The game is a bit more balanced than the old game. Additionally, the skill system is cleaner and you don't have to summon heroes in to fight; they stick with you the entire time.

Difficult?Yes.Unreasonably?No.But thats just me.I like hard games(not HV hard in give the AI unlimited resources way). And why the smaller number of resources? Its what made the game unique, and combining of races so crucial and interesting.Oh well...I might give it a go someday.

The endless spawning of the metal monsters is the equivalent of the AI having unlimited resources. However, props to you for trudging through to the end Daemian. For me, there are just some games that aren't worth spending time on when it becomes frustrating, especially with what little time I have.

Its not endless,it has its limits. And its not like it spawns 20 of those the very second you get near the base. And its not that hard either, you just have to be very fast. There was only one level where I had to run away and restart, and thats when you first get the dark elves.Other then that,it was chalenging, but not imposible.

OK, i'm definatly not going to play #1, so can anyone tell me the story in that one? #2 I already finished.
Just make the text white and between quote codes, to avoid spoiling it for everyone else.

Doesnt work when you have a necro theme,so lets just put in one big red

SPOILER WARNING

The game starts with the animation of two armies of humans and orcs preparing for a huge battle, and two mages talking about the domination of the world, and about some book. The the two armies clash, and the two mages as well. Then the world blows up,and most of the humans and orc fall into flaming pits, and two mages start racing towards the book while faling into hot lava.Quite impresive actually.

Anyway, during the game you find out that you are a soul warrior(forgot the name)that mages use to fight for them.Better then mercenaries, because you are immortal, yet must obey. You are special because the mage possesing you sets you free. You get an assassination attempt(a pretty poor one)and start investigating. You find out that the book from the begining was actually a joke of the gods, and that it brought the end of the world, and only two mages survived, the one that set you free, has helped restore the world, set portals, and has the book(hes name is roland,I think),and another one nothing is known about(you also recognize them as the two mages from the intro sequence).

While searching for the other one,you find out that the assassination on you was just a scam to make you deliver roland to the other mage that kills him.

Then you search for the third mage that can help you defeat the living armors that the second mage created. But the second mage is undead now.He tells you that you need an artifact(I think it was heart of the griffin)in order to kill the master armor. When you find it,you go for the evil mage.

But when you kill the master armor, and just before you get to the evil mage,he opens a portal and disappears.Though very short, the last animation tells you that the evil mage is actually roland himself, and he used the time portal in order to return to the past and conquer the world with the help of the book he got from roland he killed. But when he returns,he changes his mind because he gets the point of the book.Pretty confusing, yet very mind boggling.

Thats the short story, the way I remember it(I played over two years ago,so I remember just the most important parts).

There were two expansions, but I didnt play them,so someone else will have to write those.

It's Rune Warrior. And if anyone can explain in a less confusing way i'd apreciate it. ;)

While I mostly prefer turn based strategy, SF2 looks interesting with its blend of strategy and RPG. I did not play SF1.

From a single player perspective how replayable is SF2? I only have dial up at the moment and I'm really not into multiplayer much anyways.

GOW
