Favourite HoMM story

Vote The Succession Wars. If I had to choose, I'd lean toward Archibald's campaign as having the best story.

Now thats a tough one.Still,Im voting HIV mostly because of death and order.And the whole planet blew up is also a nice way of making a fresh start,but with everything we know and love back.

You forgot H1.

But H3 Complete features both a big story and some stand alone ones. And H4 Standard had 6 different stories happening in the same world. Can't really vote like that.

IIRC, #1 didn't have much in terms of a story, but still played well. I think both H2 and H3 had great stories, but I'm still gonna go with H4.

I enjoyed all of its campaigns, especially A Pirate's Daughter and Elwin and Shaera, even though the latter contained quite a few cliches. Despite that, the campaigns wove a rich, atmospheric story boosted by fun and enjoyable scenarios.

As regards the stories of H4, I think most people will opt for the Half-dead campaign as the best. While I agree that the story is excellent, I was a little bummed out by all the lava terrain, undead vegetation and the like that contributed to some bleak looking (but well-crafted nonetheless) maps. I guess I'm just more of a happy-go-lucky, rolls-on-freshly-mown-grass, revels-in-life sorta guy (as if everyone's favourite version of the unicorn that is my avatar wasn't proof enough of that already). :D

Voted H4. I've never played through all the campaigns in H2, and while H3's stories are rather good, H4's are excellent.

I had two choices: make a detailed poll with many, many options or make a standard poll. I tried to reduce number of options as much as posible, but it was somewhere at 15.

Also, he told that he isn't sure.

I like the idea for this poll, but I agree it's incomplete. Therefore: no vote.

Editorial note: One thing I liked from Heroes III-IV (and HII PoL, possibly) was the large universe they created. It seems doubtful that some of the campaign characters even knew each other or had even heard of one another. I believe this is better storytelling than the rest of the Heroes series because it creates a more open-ended world, which may encourage map/modmakers. Also, this method lessens the chance of having one long badly written plot to wade through.

Especially Shadow of Death and Armageddon's Blade. :)

(Gauldoth’s was probably the biggest in terms of scale, seeing as he went to another planet and another plane, but even his didn’t involve Paledra, or the barbarians, or anything else except some correspondence with Emilia).

Agree, but I’d like to add that for me having NO interaction or correspondence between campaigns is rather disappointing. I prefer the RoE/SoD setup, where you have a handful of campaigns to choose from at the start and you unlock the later ones as you go. It gives incentive to beat them all, too :)

Heroes II only because Heroes I wasn't mentioned. I personally enjoyed the story for it quite a bit. Both in-game and out. Even though the in-game story part was kind of weak, it was my first HoMM game (to play), so it scores high for introducing me to the world, and it did a damn fine job of it, I think.

Sorry, but forums don't allow more then 10 options.
RoE+SOD, 6 campaigns from AB, Heroes Cronicles, 6 stories from H4, GS, WoW, H5 = 17 stories - merged as much as posible.

I like both approaches. But H4 was all about civil wars. Every people tries to form a nation but in those people are leaders who wish to bcome rulers so they fight together. They don't have neither time and neother the resources for war with neighbors. So this was a logical approach.
GS and WoW had connected stories and 6th (last) campaign had all heroes from previous campaigns in theme but the stories were terrible writen. However, in WoW it is great to see your 5 heroes fight one another which all their skills from past campaigns.

I loved Heroes Chronicles story with Tarnum. Doesnt quite qualifie as Heroes III and its expansions.

If we also talk about user-made, then my favourite would be "Going Gold". By Rachel Butt.
