Corrupted savegames ?
Corrupted savegames ?
I was playing H5, and my comp crashed (not because of H5). When i try to reload the savegame i had made about 5 minutes before the crash, it will load (rather quickly, more than usual), and when it reaches the end of the loading bar, it crashes to desktop. Anyone knows how to recover the savegame? I only have this save, and the game was looking very enjoyable =/
Thanks for your input.

Corrupted Savegames?
Urgent Help! Ultimate Bug
I would suggest in the future, that you go to C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (or whatever your computer is called)\My Documents\My Games\Heroes of Might and Magic 5\Profiles … and copy your Profile(s) to another location or directory for safe keeping. That way, if your savegames get corrupted, you can recall a copy of your profile to the appropriate folder.

Re: Corrupted savegames ?
Really weird that you link the topic we're already in there . And it's not surprising that Gus' mucked up seing as the comp crashed while saving the file. That's almost guaranteed to corrupt the save.HodgePodge wrote: Lots of people seem to have experienced a corrupted save game file …

But in game autosave (or just hitting F6 occasionally to do a non-quick save) is a much more viable option than continually alt-tabing out to make maual backups.I would suggest in the future, that you go to C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (or whatever your computer is called)\My Documents\My Games\Heroes of Might and Magic 5\Profiles … and copy your Profile(s) to another location or directory for safe keeping. Hi Gus,
What do you see on the thumbnail for that corrupted saved game? Does it look like it has buggy horizontal stripes? If so would you please post a screenshot? I'm requesting this because I had the same thing 2-3 times, and each time I remember seeing 1-2 funny stripes on the thumbnail image (I hope you know what I mean). However, I somehow overwrote those files without getting a screenshot. So, if you can, we can post this on the Buglist thread as an evidence.

Re: Corrupted savegames ?
Since I had a crash at the end of heaven that corrupted my entire profile,I always back it up after each play.As for your now useles save, theres nothing you can do but go to previous one.Gus wrote:I was playing H5, and my comp crashed (not because of H5). thanks all for your answers, but i think you all more or less misread =)
- My profile is fine and not corrupted
- The game did not crash while saving
- Autosave takes much too long, i regularly save by hand anyway, but only in one savegame. The point being that my games don't last very long, and i'm not a fan of going back a lot, so i save from time to time, and that's been enough until now (and i've played a lot).
- to answer theGryphon's concern: the thumbnail looks clean, nothing hinting at a bug of any kind.
- DL i ave no previous one, hence my thread =P But in a more general way, it could be interesting to find a way to "restore" such savegames if at all possible. I'm sure it could be handy for a lot of people. And once again, my comp did not crash during the save (it did not even crash because of H5).
thanks for your input, waiting for updates now (so quick, go to work! =P)

Re: Corrupted savegames ?
happened to me also, luckily only 2 out of 3 autosaves where corrupt, so I just used the 3rd.
Has happened to me too during the campaigns. I deleted all my saved games and then went to load quicksave but when it got to the end the game crashed and closed and it went back to the desktop. Had to start that map again so it wasnt all bad for me. I think I did something 'odd' when it was saving or loading so I may have been the cause of the corruption. Unfortunately I forget what it was I did.
At the time I didnt know where the saved games were kept so didnt go and look at it.

I didn't mean to "Alt-Tab" out of the game every time you want to save, I meant once or twice a day save your Profile. Then if your Profile gets corrupted, you'll only lose a few hours instead of the whole thing.Psychobabble wrote: But in game autosave (or just hitting F6 occasionally to do a non-quick save) is a much more viable option than continually alt-tabing out to make maual backups.
yeah, but once again, my Profile's fine, only one savegame is corrupted and won't load.
As for using multiple slots, well, no, sorry, i shouldn't have to use multiple slots to prevent savegames being corrupted because the game crashed AFTER the saving process was completed. I turn off autosave because it is way too slow, and i'm not looking for savegames to allow me to go back in time and decide different. I just want a game which can save a game without corrupting it when it crashes, even if it was made 10 minutes before the crash.

I had a problem with a save that crashed to desktop once when loading it. However, having updated my video card drivers to newest revision fixed the problem (and all crash problems). The game now plays completely stable.Gus wrote:yeah, but once again, my Profile's fine, only one savegame is corrupted and won't load.

Did it happen with only _one_ savegame ? Because i can save/load perfectly fine, even since the crash, it's only that one savegame which is corrupted.
I don't care particularly about that game, but i think it could be nice if we could find a way (if there is any) to recover corrupted savegames. It could be of great help to people.

Yes, it only happened to that one save game and after the driver update it no longer happened and has never happened again.Gus wrote:Did it happen with only _one_ savegame ? Because i can save/load perfectly fine, even since the crash, it's only that one savegame which is corrupted.

This leads me to speculate that maybe the save game is not quite corrupted, rather there is a problem with the loading of the graphics at the place where the save game was saved. Especially since your game crashed after the save at that place.
Maybe you could send the save game to somebody who can try it on their computer and see if it crashes on their computer too.
Well, the comp crashed because i was messing around with the cables while it was running (i know it's bad, but i know what i'm doing =) ). Or maybe it was a coincidence and it did crash because of what you mentioned. I'll try to update my drivers and see if it helps, cheers.Jorgen wrote:Yes, it only happened to that one save game and after the driver update it no longer happened and has never happened again.

Well, i do know the risks of unplugging something. I did it with a purpose, and accepting the risks of a crash of my computer. On the other hand, you don't have to expect that a savegame become corrupted when you saved a couple of minutes before the crash.
Other than that, do you do anything else here than posting off-topic? =)
