Gamespot gives Heroes V 8.2

Unread postby Pitsu » 24 May 2006, 15:13

Gamespot has published their review of Heroes V. The author finds that the game stays true to the spirit of a great and creative turn-based strategy series. The music and variety in gameplay get prised most. Lack of a proper manual and minor bugs and lags are what brings the total score down to 8.2 out of 10 points, which is still rather good. Overall the review is positive and the author concludes that even skeptical Heroes fans, as well as anyone looking for a fun, long-lasting turn-based strategy game, will likely be pleasantly surprised by this one.

It is worth noting that Gamespot also gave H2 an 8.2.

I have probably offended you in this post. if you take it too harshly, it's your own responsability. I, for my part, never intended to.

I too find it incredible that you would release a game with so little documentation. Skills, abilities, spells, creatures, buildings - no documentation. And you have no way too figure out, what the creatures special abilities are. E.g. "Shield bash" - what does it do, and how often?

UBI relies heavily on the comunity to create tools and documentation as for instance the Skill Wheel. without which you are missing valuable information. That IS NOT the way to attract new players.

Hopefully they will make some of this available through a patch or download.

I have bought the collectors edition myself, and am very disappointed that it did not include decent documentation.

"It is worth noting that Gamespot also gave H2 an 8.2"

and

"it is worth noting they gave heroes 4 a 8.8"

... which is to say that, generally, a Gamespot review of a strategy game is not going to tell you much...!

I think that's a disappointing score... :/

I'd wish they would rate the fully patched game!

Most gaming sites have a policy not to review patches, and I believe that's a good thing as it forces publishers to release their games in good shape (even if it doesn't happen anyway).
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

Besides, they can't be expected to wait for a month just so that the first patch will have time to come out.

And patches are supposed to be bug fixers and balance bringers, not content adders.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that after some 500 votes, players rate the game at 9.
In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity, In Peace: Goodwill.

Player votes are often a point or two above the staff score. But it shows that the game appeals to both critics and fans so far.

It is worth noting, again, that high scores, around a 9 I'd say, is usually what fans are going to say about any game on Gamepot. Seriously, check it out. Fans are fans, and that's what they do: praise the things they are fans of.

i actually thought the review was pretty fair .... they generally mark games down on multiplayer thou (if it is not implemented well i mean) and IMO HV is MORE a SP game than MP, sure, you can play it that way, and it can be fun, but SP is where it's at for most people (who has time to play a xl map against a few opponents?)

duel is an interesting idea thou, and im glad ubi/nival had a crack at some decent MP

I can't believe the best of them all, H2 expansion, got such poor reviews. Of all my memories I have, that was the best for it's time. Of course, it's much less playable now :(

Well if I had played the game for less then 10 hours I would have given it 8 or 9 too. Mostly due to graphic.

Now I have played more then 10 I go down to 6-7. There are to much lacking and unfinished. Way to little custom map,,,controls are not responding nice on the adventure map...much lag on single players if you have several heroes, and so on.

They say the oponent is agressive....hehehe yea they attack you with a little force and are bound to loose...maybe AI have to much agressivety:)

Look forward to patch....wich should have been into main release...look forward to mapeditor so you clever people can save some of the day for it!

And now shoot:)

Well ....first...back when heroes started we did't have the graphic wonderland we have today. Most game was rated for it's abillity to hook you into gameplay.
In my opinion I was hooked from HoMM 1, it was a big step forward on HoMM2, and number 3 was my all time favorit, even if I have complete 4 and now the graphic 5, which lack much of the gameplay from number 1! (I would never become an HoMM fan if I started on HoMM 4, even if they are more up to date)
I choose gameplay over graphic any day, but nice if you get both...try Oblivion:)
