Most people who like HOMM will also like RPG/RTS related games. Here are some suggestions of games that I've enjoyed tremendously over the past year. Many of these games are very similar to HOMM and I'm sure many HOMM fans would love playing them while waiting for HOMM5.
Spellforce - Awesome RPG/RTS, one of the best I've ever played
Neverwinter Night Diamond Edition - Collection of all NWN release and expansion, highly recommended.
Sacred Gold Edition - First person, RPG. Quest based, and much better than Diablo
Guild Wars - First person RPG, online-games with NO MONTHLY FEE. Highly recommended.
Armies of Exigo - 3 race RTS, similar to Warcraft.
Warcraft - RTS, highly recommended.
Disciples II Gold Edition - Comprise of Disciples II and 3 expansion, similar to HOMM
ge of Wonders II - Another game very similar to HOMM
Age of Mythology - A RTS games, for those of you who love AoE but with a mythological twist.
I highly recommend putting this games in the Market Place.

I'll agree with Argonaut. I've played:
Neverwinter Nights: Definitely a great game, D+D perfection.
Sacred: I played a demo, very fun, Diablo fans try it!
Guild Wars: I was considering, but didn't play.
Disciples II: I've seen it, excellent graphics and game style.
Age of Mythology: Very good game, mythological warfare with god powers and stuff. The expansion ruled.
Baldur's Gate: IMO, a earlier version of NWN, also based on D+D, but with M+M's ability to pause in battles and command troops. Huge game. Tried the sequel, but got bored.
Icarus: Bit of an older game and very straightforward, but has an interesting character line-up with awesome skills in battle. Has a RTS world, but battles are TBS.
Warcraft III: Absolutely a great game! A combo of AoM's exciting battles and Heroes IV's hero customization!
World of Warcraft: For online gamers, a perfect replica of the Warcraft world, but with you as the hero. Has HOMM's endless replayablility, and a strong essence of RPG. Buy soon, the expansion The Burning Crusade will be out in May!
