Sorry to bump such an old (stickied) topic, but I figured I'd mention that this mod is still getting updates.
Just a couple of months ago (as of this post), they released a
new update video showcasing the better town screens,
Heroes II-styled spell animations, and a few other things. It's pretty wild and
very impressive.
Little bit of a ramble, here, but I was never a huge fan of the style of the "Enroth" games. See, when New World Computing made
Heroes III, they wanted to tie into the new mainline games more-so than the first two
Heroes games. In doing so, they switched from the cartoon-y graphics of the "Ancients universe" games and went with the more photo-realistic / CGI style of the "Enroth" games (
Might and Magic VI onward). Yes, the first two
Heroes games are, indeed, set in Enroth, but it wasn't until
Heroes III that their art / graphic style matched up. As such, I never really got into
III as much as I did
II or even
I. Coming back and watching some
Heroes III videos, I can see what a
huge jump in quality it is, much like
II was to
I. I can also see that despite the new looks… it's still very similar to the games I grew up with.
A project like this takes a lot of commitment and hard work. The fact that this isn't just a simple sprite-swap or something says a lot about the people who work on it. As huge fan of
The Succession Wars, this is something that's right up my alley and I very much appreciate all the effort that's gone into this – particularly when it comes to the maps. They didn't just convert
Heroes II maps. They even converted some maps from
Heroes I! But moreover, having the look of
Heroes II and the gameplay changes of
Heroes III in one convenient package is just… really amazing. I wish I'd know about this sooner! This is really
great!
