The Call of Liriel (MM678-like game) live on Indiegogo

Unread postby Dragonfly » 21 Nov 2017, 15:08

Hi! We launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign so you can help us bringing The Call of Liriel to life.

The Call of Liriel is an indie open world first-person party-based free movement RPG, inspired on 90's first-person RPGs, main inspiration from Might and Magic 6,7,8 and Wizardry 8. You are a party of four novice monster hunters looking for your next adventure. You heard about an island where inhabitants are terrorized by a group of giant spiders. You travel there to start your epic monster hunter career. Things will become increasingly complicated as you join the battle between light and dark forces!

Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

Yes, the portraits are from the MaestroMod!
There will be a way to change the 2D images (portraits, dolls, spellbook, NPCs, etc) so you can put whatever you want.

Possibilities to mod simple things in simple ways is certainly a bonus.

Well with six days left on their funding campaign; it has only received 18% of its $8000 goal ($1470). So it appears this one may not see the light of day.

That's unfortunate. This looks really nice.
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

Hi, unfortunately the campaign is not doing well. I will cancel it (Indiegogo will refund the money). We'll try to continue it on our spare time, and at least release the first quests. Thanks for the backers who dreamed with us that it could be possible!

Well, it can't be cancelled (Kickstarter allows it, Indiegogo doesn't). So we'll have to wait until the campaign's end, this Thursday.

This is not "similar" to Might and Magic VII, this is literally the same engine, same character portrait, same inventory and items... At least the video shows stuff that looks exactly like M&M7.

Guys you seems to really overestimate your abilities, I mean in terms of graphics, you can just go for box-like houses like it was in original. Overdetailing stuff in such a game will make it harder to spot points of interest. People will tolerate simplicity as long as you have some sense of art direction. I suggest you to look at post-impressionist art, especially Cézanne, that will give you the idea on how to make simple things look beautiful. Basically set the limit for your meshes and textures per map or object to not get off the track, that will help you to keep things simple and save a lot of time. Regarding to the NPCs and creatures I'd recommend to look at the games of PS1 era. In terms of animation you can try to use minimum of keyframes (less information, less work, true to original). Please, please simplify it you are doing much more than needed. M&M on its own stands out among other projects, maybe check the palette they used, show people that it is not just another 3D action rpg, you don't even need to invent anything it looked good as it was.

Please look into the terrain as well. It was a big part of the game, for me its simplisity is a real signature. It was simple but cleverly used to form a level, not just a land.

Please don't cut out everything from the UI. M&M VIII did this minimal and right already. Just take it and make minimal adjustments, don't go full minimalistic, UI is art as well as anything else in the game. If you think that UI from VII is superior and you are ok to force 4:3 ratio, go for it.
edit: Sliding party panel from there might be actually a nice thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9W7Y2D11qk

By the way, mouse look and headbobbing makes it look like some TES knock-off or our beloved IX.
Please don't take it close to heart, I've been a long fan of the series and I know how hard it is to get it right with this kind of project, but someone has to make it since all 3D games from the series were unpolished/unfinished and later on no one really tried to build up on it. Wish you good luck.

Dragonfly, here also, I did make a video to help me analyse how the game works in terms of aesthetics. It is basically a test run of Emerald Island, without any UI and constantly changing texture filtering. Here's the link: GoogleDrive. It might be helpful. I, myself, have some experience with 3D graphics, but I am not sure if I can join or you want me to join yet, so I am sort of dumping my thoughts.

I hope it goes well for you, but do know that i grant you a 50/50 of it getting done, seen alot of these big projects start grand, then slow down and finally fizzle out into vaporware.

The project did not make its funding goal, and has since been scaled back.
