If you could give the Might & Magic IP to any company...

Unread postby magritte2 » 07 Aug 2015, 21:05

Who would it be?

It's not a secret that many longtime fans of the series haven't been happy with Ubisoft's releases. In a perfect world where you could just give the game to the perfect company who would it be? With some games you can look for the old developers responsible for the classics, so giving the Fallout series to Obsidian where Chris Avellone and Feargus Urquhart are would be a no-brainer. But I don't even know if Jon van Caneghem and Greg Fulton are still in the industry. There's 1C who've been doing a nice job with the King's bounty series but would they want two series that kind of flank the King's Bounty gameplay? I'm trying to think of a company with a flair for turn-based games and the right kind of fantasy feel. Illwinter (who make Dominions) would probably make an interesting and complex strategic version of HOMM but the tone might be off.

Good choice!

Paradox and Fireaxis would be my second and third choices.

Back to JVC, if he still wants. Would be interesting to know.
Otherwise I approve of Katauri.

So what, maybe he could get back on track if he gets the opportunity we never know.
He's the dude who created the series after all.

Yeah and he wouldn't get it back on the track fans want - he did try developing it in directions too, you know ... ;)

At least his directions are based on successful game, not just on voices in his head. Unlike you know who. ;)

I doubt it. In the interview, he sounded disillusioned with PC game development because it has become too brittle and resource-intensive. The mobile space reminded him of the early PC days with small teams and highly iterative development cycle.

I also think you put too much weight on JVC's personal input. Do you really think he was the only one working on the old games and wanted to control every stage of the development? That he never allowed anyone else to go with their ideas?

Form a new team or the Katauri like a second choice. :)

I meant to find the interview where he said he'd like to do another HoMM game but couldn't find it anymore, maybe you see the one which I'm talking about.

Triumph has never let me down, and has demonstrated great skill at making games like Homm over the years.

Blizzard. Their execution of every game they do is almost flawless. They also have the confidence and resources to take a bit of a risk with games and gameplay. And they have battle.net but that actually works, compared to that ubi monstrosity.

In a dream world, I might say the Camelot of the early 90s that released Shining Force. While the Shining series seldom had a plot more complicated than "save the world from Dark Sol," the characters oozed personality, the battles were tremendous fun to replay, and the classes were interesting. I regret that the Shining series devolved into a bunch of action games.

Ahmm... no! Unless you want to see the next game in the series released in 2030. I am willing to wait for a good next instalment but I am not gonna wait till I am old enough to lose the will to copulate.

I think Nival deserves another chance. Heroes 5 had a lot of problems when it was released but most of them got fixed and there were a lot of cool new ideas and improvements after the expansions and patches. If they take the lessons they learned from Heroes 5, they could make a great game.
