Most poweful party for MM7

I can't understand difficulty of thief promoution. Wand or scroll of paralize... And thief have anouth HP without 1st promoution and You can wait this wand/scroll. I think thief is more usefull that stupid knight.
PS. I played last several times without trainings (I hope not only I) and sure that knight is avaliable only in party with Cleric/Paladin, Thief, Sorc., but second sorc. will be very much usefull.
