I'm assuming the "black screen" is the instance where the screen goes dark but the music keeps running and you can move the "gauntlet" mouse cursor: I got this in the Necromancer campaign (original game) right after I captured my first town. I went to the town screen and clicked on the "covert" button and it happened. I'm very disappointed that a bug like this hasn't been fixed after a game has been out for a year.
I have uninstalled the game and will not be playing it until an official fix has been released. Especially after the stupid Uplay error I just had (see post in forum).

no. they meant the movie cutscenes in the intro.
yes, that was most definitely a well documented bug in a microsoft video patch. It took them almost 2 months to finally admit it and fix it. it wasn't just this game that was affected; there was a HUGE list of programs that use or edit video that were affected.
you can uninstall the game as you like, but there will NEVER EVER be a patch for the black screen town issue.
as I have said elsewhere, it is an issue with nvidia 64 bit drivers, and you MUST either replace the wrapper it uses, or else go back to using 301.42 drivers.
on the plus side, I have thoroughly tested the older drivers, and on my card (560 ti) they actually work BETTER than the newer drivers do. much more stable for everything, not just the game.
sometimes nvidia, in modding their drivers for the newer cards, fubars them for their older ones.
Sir_Toejam, I can't speak for 100% of users or laptop users, but for me the Black screen on attacking bug is 100% solvable by closing all other 3D apps and all web browsers.
For me, it happened (happens?) with ALL different Nvidia driver versions. And is clearly an issue in the game, but as you said UBI will most probably never fix it.
The Frozen Town Screen bug is a completely different one and was completely fixed several patches of Heroes VI back.
EDIT: There never was a Black screen Town issue!!! The Black screen was on trying to attack an enemy town/fort/neutrals.
Here is a description of the TWO bugs:
1) In the Town screen, you get a frozen screen which is NOT black! You get it when you open your own Town Screen, and try to interact.
2) When trying to attack and having something using the Nvidia GeForce videocard besides the Heroes VI game, then you sometimes get a Black screen, which is NOT a frozen screen.
However, they are similar in that in both cases music keeps playing.
In the Town screen case you can move the mouse around and also press and click, and it works. Not sure about Black screen on trying to attack - have not tried pressing keyboard buttons or clicking mouse butons, as I rarely get it anyway, due to using the above described workaround.
NOTE: Laptops with two videocards - one built-in and one NVidia GeForce may work (or more exactly, fail) the way you describe - I am not sure, because I only have a desktop PC with a GeForce card and the Intel card disabled. I hear that switchable laptop graphics work differently than desktop GeForce offerings.

Well, this was the only game I've experienced video issues and I do play other graphically intensive games. Could you please explain what you meant by "replacing the wrapper"? I'm not familiar with that term. I have a GeForce GT 630 graphics card and run Windows 7 64 bit if that's any help. The current driver version is 30.49.Sir_Toejam wrote:BahamutXero wrote:I'm assuming the "black screen" is the instance where the screen goes dark but the music keeps running and you can move the "gauntlet" mouse cursor: I got this in the Necromancer campaign (original game) right after I captured my first town. The game just is not stable enough for me to be playable. I'm not satisfied with Ubi just saying "Oh, sorry go back to using old drivers." I have other games that need the newest driver versions. I'm just tired of Ubi's lack of care of its clients. Yeah, the game isn't the greatest but we should at least be able to play it from start to finish without it crashing every five minutes.

there is a dll that comes with Nvidia drivers that causes problems with this game.
It's called a 'wrapper' because of the kind of functions it handles, but for the life of me, I can't recall the specific name of the file now.
I know I have seen threads talking about how to remove it (99% of programs don't utilize it). Let me see if I can dig one up for you that explains what it is and how to change it.

Don't go crazy looking for it but any help would be appreciated. I know the game has many other faults (most of which are not forgivable), but at least I'd be able to play through it without cursing every five minutes.
I've also sent an e-mail to Nvidia expressing my frustrations with the driver issues. I'm sure it won't go anywhere, but I needed to vent.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

What exact crashes do you get??? Maybe you have a completely different issue, and trying to solve an issue with steps for solving a different one is pointless!BahamutXero wrote:Don't go crazy looking for it but any help would be appreciated. The most common are in battle. I can't give the specific instance, but I think it's when I'm attacking. The screen will go completely black but the music will keep playing and the only way to exit is to kill the game. This happened fairly regularly, but thanks to autosave, annoying but not game breaking...yet.Naki wrote:What exact crashes do you get??? The most recent one that made me uninstall the game in disgust was the instance noted earlier in this post when I was in the town screen and pressed the convert button and the screen went dark (but not too dark as I could still see everything), the music kept playing and I could still move the mouse, but I wasn't able to click anything and had to kill the game again. I've only had this happen once, but that's enough for me.
The other bugs are known (such as tooltips being wrong, spell damage/mana costs being off, damage calculations being weird, etc.) are just careless but not game breaking.
Like I mentioned above, I've played other graphically intensive games and don't have any other problems except for Heroes VI and it's just unjustifiable to me that Ubi and/or Nvidea haven't done anything to resolve it other than "the use older drivers" defense.
I really appreciate any advise you can give. I have posted my system information on the Ubi "black screen" thread in their forums like so many others, but I'm fairly certain at this point that not much will come of it but it doesn't happen often but occasionally, I've been proven wrong .

Long live the king of dragons!!
Has anyone encountered a weird bug with boarding ships in Haven Campagne map 3? Randomly, for some reason, my hero just can't board a ship after landing (yes, he has plenty of movement points left). When I hover the ship, it just shows a small red ship icon instead of the normal anchor icon. He would be stuck in the town, which is accessible only by boat, until he townportals out, leaving the boat stranded.

Yet another well known bug
It's great fun to first buy a physical copy of the Heroes VI Gold Edition and then return happily back home to install and play the game, and yes, with the latest/final patch installed... And guess what happens next?
Oh darn it all! Oh no, pity poor me for my life's all ruined now. *sob, sob*
Of course, being cynical enough, I instantly found better use for the utterly cursed thing. Heroes VI is for babies.
(in the photo above is my then-6 months old daughter holding her new toy)
I should had suspected there being something rotten the moment I saw this, a screen from a trailer advertising the HVI open beta testing. Black Hole Entertainment, the guys who made Heroes VI are Hungarians...but still, they could have double checked the translated texts to avoid using broken English. Not only was the "Aliance" broken but the entire Heroes VI experience was as well, and my God, how badly so it really was!
*end of ranting*

Don't worry if things are going badly today. They will be much worse tomorrow.
Hmm, it seems the slow time to exit bug may be fixed, or at least greatly improved! My game does not take 20-30+ seconds to exit now, but just 3-5 seconds. It seems this was caused by a recent UPlay patch, since the actual game is unchanged (version 2.1.1).
Guys (those still playing, if any??), how long does the game exit for you - under 5 seconds, or more?

THE Solution for "Out of sync" problem
Hello I read several days ago on another forum that the problem "Out of sync" is from dynasty weapon but I didn't believe that at this moment. But today I tried again to load a multiplayer saved game that I couldn't finish in the past and I remove the dynasty weapon on my heroe before to finish my turn and then SURPRISE !!! no "out of sync" problem and I can continue the game normaly even if the next turn, I reattached the dynasty weapon. I tried also to change dynasty weapon instead of remove it and this solution works also. But I noticed that if the saved game linked to the turn of the second player and not with the player who load the saved game, it is impossible to continue the game and there are always out of sync.
I'm really happy to find this solution and I wish that it will work also for you!!!
Good game!
