Tears of Asha / Puzzle Map visual problem

Unread postby seandees » 29 May 2013, 23:34

Hello,
I have a question about Puzzle Map. Every image I have found on the internet shows the Puzzle Map in a fuzzy sort of blue-ish colour that you have to try and figure out what is a pond or a mountain. My new computer is the same way. (Windows 7) My old computer (Vista) with exactly the same version of the game installed shows the puzzle map in crystal clear details just like your regular adventure map.
It also doesn't matter if you have uncovered only one obelisk, or all of the them. The portion of the map that is uncovered is clear on one computer and blue-ish haze on the other.
Is this a bug on my old computer, or is there a way to change the view on the puzzle map on my new computer to show the details?
BTW: I am using the GOG.com version of Heroes of Might and Magic V. (Very stable with all the latest patches.)
It's also not a map specific bug. I checked out Campaign 1 and Campaign three. They both have a quest to find the Tears. And on my old computer the Puzzle map is crystal clear with all the details, and my new computer is shrouded in blue fog.
Also, I have seen a few suggestions to use the Heroe's movement trails to help locate the Tears on the Puzzle. It doesn't seem to work with either computer. Was that "fixed" at some point so you couldn't do that?
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks, Sean

You could "try" this fix from "Icharus". It cleared up a vid-issue for me. The link Post has the red QP star.

I am not sure that is the problem. It looks like that fix works for people having problems with the system having trouble handling Large or Extra Large Maps due to the amount of RAM the system is using. The new computer handles large and extra large maps beautifully with no slow downs or graphic glitches at all. Campaign 1, map 3 (I think) is only a small map with a puzzle map and the puzzle map is the only thing that is a problem visually.
Here is a link to what it looks like on the new system. The link is to someone else's walk-through of the game:

He has 3 different pictures of the puzzle map on the bottom of the page - all of the sort of blue-ish tinted. That is what it looks like on my new system.
On my old system it looks more like your standard adventure map - in full colour and clear. Sort of like the first picture in this link:
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/63 ... rums/page2
(Of course without the hero and info bars being visible, and with the puzzle "grail" located in the center of the screen.)
Which picture does the puzzle map look like on your computer?
Thanks!
Sean

I have Win-7 and mine is bluish. About that fix, I had plenty of Ram, the fix was about making the game use it correctly and that stopped some blur.

I did a complete test and used a Hero equipped with the "tears of Asha Vision" to see what impact that could have. (I was afraid my A.I. mod might cause an error but the Vision worked correctly as I dug a "few spots from where I knew it was."

Btw, Here's the info from the manual and it shoots down the idea of being directed to the spot. :D
Tear of Asha Vision
The hero now 'feels' the location of the Tear of Asha in his or her very heart. Digging for a Tear of Asha somewhere
around its actual location is much more likely to be a success.

The hero has 100% chance of finding the grail when digging in a 5x5 area around it.
Also, to verify, I put a Cartographer on the map to ensure that a possible Hero trail on the puzzle-map was not blocked due to visibility. i.e. You cannot hire creature-caravans from a dwelling that has the path to your town blocked by Fog of war.

Anyway, my Puzzle-map is Bluish and a "trail-to-it" never shows in the map. I had no interaction-possiblity with the icon on the map, no matter how near or far. Fyi it took about a week to get to the spot. :>)

Thanks for all your info. So your system shows everything my new system shows. (Blue-ish screen, no hero trails, etc.)
I did notice that occassionally I would see a flock of birds fly over a section of the puzzle map, but there were no other changes.
I wonder why my old system allowed me to see everything clearly? Very strange.
Thanks for checking everything. I wasn't sure if my problem was with my old system, new system, or the version of Heroes I was using. It kinda sucks that the old & very slow system shows the puzzle clearly, but the new, fast system makes it more difficult to figure out where the Tears are located.
Thanks!
Sean
