We're running out of internet...

In less than 18 months there will be no more big blocks of net addresses to give out, estimates suggest.

Predictions name 9 September 2011 as the date on which the last of those tranches is released for net firms and others to use.

Everything connected to the net needs an "IP address" to ensure data reaches the right person or device.

Experts say that the net's entire existing address space will be exhausted about a year after that date.

A newer scheme is being rolled out but many firms and countries are being slow to switch, experts warn.
So, if CH ready for IPv6?!

Very interesting I hadn't thought you could run out of IP addresses I thought they would just tack on another .XXX to the end and it would all be good. I'm guessing that their next story on it will be how it will cost billions to get it updated.

Technically that's exactly what they're doing... and you'd know that if you had bothered to click the link.

But they need to modify the software for the new addresses to work, and most people aren't very keen to do that yet... (As i understand Vista and 7 do have it though, so they don't need the network/servers to convert it for them).

Actually I did click the link and they are adding .XXX.XXX if I understand right what I meant was I didnt think they would have to "modify the software for the new addresses to work" as you put it.

I hope its not gonna be another "scare" like Y2K that was annoying to no end.

No, it's not. Plenty of time than IPv6 will really come to us. And in 'theory' very little work on our side when it will strike. ;)

Yes, the switch to IPv6 will be so life changing that nothing will ever be the same...

Took them long enough. Linux had support for IPv6 for a decade or so now.
