Games similar to Might and Magic?
Games similar to Might and Magic?
a few defining characteristics i'm looking for in a game similar to M&M:
- multiple characters
- free roaming gameplay
- questing
- RPG leveling & skill system
- Western RPG style
- preferably 1st person view
- preferably well defined personalities of characters
the only one I can come up with just now is Wizardry 8, which I enjoyed a lot. If we expand the definition a little we might include things like Final Fantasy (not free roaming; Japanese style) or Daggerfall (single character). are there any other games adhering to M&M's general formula?

M&M is definitely Unique in it's own way, they just simply don't make 1st person party-based RPGs anymore. Wizardry 8's definitely the closest you'll get to something like MM6-9. However, there are probably a few games that play closer to MM1-5, but i'd have absolutely no idea about them.
One amazing game that ticks everything but 1st person view is Baldur's gate II. I very highly recommend this game if you haven't played it.

I agree that the BD series are a lot of fun, but wasn't the second installment single character based? I may be wrong, because I only ever played the XBOX version, which could be different from the PC one.One amazing game that ticks everything but 1st person view is Baldur's gate II. another great suggestion, but not very similar. it was single character, and action based rather than RPG.I've heard the Thief series is supposed to be pretty good. Not sure how similar to M&M it is, but it's certainly popular and it's a medieval RPG.
True. I knew there was something that kept dragging me back to this series.M&M is definitely Unique in it's own way, they just simply don't make 1st person party-based RPGs anymore.
Baldur's Gate II is PC only. You usually just create 1 character and go in a party of 6 everywhere, where all characters have very deep storylines and fairly massive quests. You can also create 6 characters from the getgo but you'll lose a lot of party interactions.
You're thinking of Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance II, which is a completely different game and which i have never played myself.
If you look on Metacritic or Gamerankings, you'll see Baldur's Gate II as number 6 or 7 there for top PC games (95 metacritic score), it's the highest rated RPG on the PC ever.

There's this very old game I played on the 3DO videogame called Dead Keep or Death Keep, something of the sort.
At that time, I didn't know what the game really was (RPG, action, adventure). For me it was a game, a bit hard, but long, funny. It's been like 17 years I last played it, so I cannot bring much details about it, but it had definitely orbs/spells, dungeons, monsters, equipments, lava...

Holy cow! Just found a video of it... It's AD&D. I didn't know.
Linked above.

"There’s nothing to fear but fear itself and maybe some mild to moderate jellification of bones." Cave Johnson, Portal 2.
The game industry sadly didn't invest(and nowdays totally
ignore) the 1st person party-based RPGs, so you will find
few MnM-like games. The closest is Wizardry series(with the
8th part be the most suitable), if your are retro-fun you
can find few more games like the Ishar series or Eye of the
Beholder series etc(but most of these games requires patience
cause are really old and are complicated at their gameplay...personally
I can't play them anymore )

The Legend of Erthia is coming rapidly! It is now a cross between MM7 and World of Xeen. All the technical aspects are already implemented and a good portion of the levels are completed. I am am currently and steadily coming along with the story. I have about 18% of the game playable by the storyline. Work is picking up nicely. Therefore, progress should be quicker!

One of the few fantasy games I really enjoyed besides Might and Magic is TES 4: Oblivion.
The game in it's raw form isn't _that_ great, but there is an uncountable number of mods: vampire mods, weapon mods, new spells, new dungeons, monster mods, companions, graphic mods and much more.
I never finished the story but I liked the dungeon crawling feeling of it ^^
Also the expansion Shivering Isles is worth a buy.

Lands of Lore 1 has multiple characters. Classic game
Arx Fatalis doesn't have multiple characters but it's a great addition to the Ultima Underground world even if it had to officially drop the Ultima references before release. Plus this game had an official patch released this year (talk about commitment) (and there's a "turbo walking" fix somewhere - you might want it to). Arx Fatalis is the last great first-person fantasy RPG with the exception of the Elder Scrolls series.
I've been playing Morrowind lately. I enjoy it a lot more than Oblivion. Morrowind Overhaul is the best way to mod Morrowind. It takes a while to install, and you have to follow the instructions to a T, but it will give you a tremendous amount of hand-selected mods - the best of the best. The main thing that it is missing is BTB's Game Improvements (which adjusts cost and attributes for every item in the game but also changes the speed in which your skills level up - you might choose to use the alternative leveling settings in his zip).
