Oh well, at leat it doesn't affect gameplay... although having players care more about hats then playing can't be a good thing.

Agreed. Other than that, I think Valve have done a great job at leaving out (and selling) all the things that don't affect gameplay.

Riot did it better imo with League of Legends... there's nothing you can't get by playing enough, but if you don't want to spend all that time getting playing points you can just buy it...
