Here's another thing we remember from way back - a skeleton with some treasure underneath it.
Unlike the Ubi Facebook guy, I actually know what happened here, and it wasn't some robber who killed a dude and neglected to take the gold.
He was no doubt eaten by a wild beast. And gold can't be eaten. Good fortunes for the adventuring traveller ...

The Skeleton
I think it's more likely his mount was killed in battle.
After hungry miles on foot, the fool was too weak to walk another step carrying the huge load of gold, but his avarice prevented his leaving the treasure.
Eventually he became delusional, warding off hallucinatory attackers with his sword, then fell from exhaustion, greedily cradling his treasure until he succumbed to the "long sleep."
Fortunately, this new adventurer seems wealthy enough to leave the hoard behind if it becomes too burdensome on his return home.
How's that for imagination!

The Skeleton
Or maybe it's the gritty end of a tale in which a greedy warlord got overthrown by a revolution and the sorcerer rebel leader cursed him to vomit gold coins. He got banished to the icy wastelands, where he wandered for a while until he finally succumbed to the terrible curse and died in a last pool of coins.
Also handily explains the random piles of gold you might find in the vicinity.
I miss the little stories every artifact would get.

Those are actually small crackers, used for quick energy on the road. Unfortunately, his last battle was against a mad hermit who hit him with a well-timed Midas curse. He choked on the first cracker he ate, since it turned to gold in his throat.

That skeleton was obviously planted there by the same entity that always seems to leave out all sorts of resources and items all over the place so anyone can pick them up... i swear he/she/they/it is doing it on purpose to destabilize the economy.
