I have, in the past, completely skipped over the rampart towns. You can reach the stronghold in the first week, and should have enough sharpshooters to take it. This tactic wins faster for me than anything involving the ramparts.

If you want to ultimately prepare yourself for the rest of the maps, it's best for Gelu to take on Wisdom as early as possible and you will be able to get Expert Wisdom by the max level. Combine that with Level 5 spells from all the towns and there is a chance that you can get the best adventure map spells (fly/town portal/dimension door) on this map, making all other levels extremely easy to get by.
