Americans -er- USAians believe that a rooster crowing says, "Cock a doodle do."
My niece and I were talking today and I repeated an old cliche. I laughed that if I said that phrase on this forum, that many of the people who read it would not understand what I said. (For the life of me, I cannot remember what it was at the moment.) Then I was pondering about what odd little sayings are common in other countries that 'outsiders' would not comprehend. She said that she heard a comedian doing a bit on "What does your Rooster say?" that was very funny. Apparently, every country has a different idea of what animals sound like.
Other examples of the odd ways of saying things:
In America, Jealousy is said to be a "Green Eyed Monster", and you will occasionally hear someone teasing another that their "eyes are turning green" which means they are acting jealous or envious. An Italian friend once told me that they say a jealous person is "wearing horns".
Someone who is no fun (like Kalah) is a "Stick in the Mud".
And it's going to bother me the rest of the night until I remember what I originally said.
What does your Rooster say?

That's more for the hen, especially when it lays eggs I think... :ptheLuckyDragon wrote:Chicken go cotcodac (sounds like cotcodAhk).
Anyway, what else do we have:
- Our dogs say 'ham' (sounds like hahm if you want, think of Italian/Spanish pronunciation when it comes to Romanian spelling; especially when it comes to "a"). Quite different from the English 'bark' heh?
- Cats say 'miau' (close to English)
- Mice say 'chitz' (as in kits)
- Bears say 'mor'
- Ducks say 'mac'
- Sparrows say 'cip-cirip' (as in computer chip)
- Ring-doves say 'gugushtiuk' (I had a lot of those on my street as a kid) ...unlike other doves, which have a pretty different sound
- Crows say 'cra' (that must be close to English I think...)
- Sheep say 'mee(h)', goats say 'bee(h)', cows say 'muu(h)' (again, all similar to English)
...and so on, if I think of others, I'll add to this post.

Rooster:"Kikyrykýý!"
Cat:"Mňau!"
Bears:"Brum! Brum!"
Crows:"Bůůů."
Goats:"Mee mee"
Chicken:"Kokodák"
So, it seems, they have it internationalized, right?

Man, it's almost as everyone has slightly modified the same sound in such a way that it sounds more like the animal spoke their language...
