Ubi's new Online Policy
Ubi's new Online Policy
So Ubisoft decided to require an online connection for its future titles, even those with single player. While it's easy to tell it's meant to combat piracy I find it wrong on so many levels..
You don't have a net? That sucks, no single player for you then.
Your net is unstable? That's cool, at worst the game will pause and you'll wait till the connection is back on.
What if the servers are hacked, get laggy or lose data? Should our single player suffer?
And if they servers get canceled due to lack of profit in some years will we be waiting for a patch that solves the issue like we waited for 3.2 for tote?
We are getting the short end of the stick, it is unacceptable that they are forcing us to play by their own rules. Does Starforce ring any bells? Is this the respect they give to the paying customer? If they go that way they'd better be prepared to lose clientele, this is outrageous. Buying a single player game is meant to be a personal thing and I want nothing to do with the company I bought it from anymore.

I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

Seems they have already lost a few customers. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this thing can breach our privacy but let's see how that goes. This is indeed more of a limitation than a service.

In Mass Effect 2 I've turned of the autoconnecting thing, because it takes too long to start (and can't play until it does), and it bugs me on a more general on-principle level. And if I feel too paranoid I can just shut of my connection when I play it.
My point is of course that not being able to play offline games offline is unacceptable to me, and I hope enough people feel the same way. That's the only way to be heard, but I don't think enough people actually care for it to make an impact.

Who the hell locks these things?

I was suspicious of UBI from the time they bought the MM trademark, and this is just one more sign that I may have been right. Well I certainly will not buy any game that requires an online connection. What if (not likely) they make a game I enjoy as much as mm6-8 or H-IV and they go out of business, what do you do with all the games you bought?

Hopefully like GfWL they'll be forced to downgrade the restrictions. (GfWL used to make you pay for non FFA games).

All I can say to UBI is
Just read this one, it will be an epic fail...One of the more worrying things is that places like Amazon are taking pre-orders for Settlers 7 and Silent Hunter and aren't mentioning these new requirements, so people will order and could find they can't play the game when it arrives.

UbiSoft lost me as a customer years ago with their horrific handling of the StarForce fiasco. Now this. Looks like what they really want is to spy on all of their customers.Elvin wrote:Seems they have already lost a few customers. Assassin's creed syndrome Thing is that even if that is not their intention they have disappointed or downright insulted clients which is a sin in the market. Such incidents can leave a permanent mark on your reputation. And in contemporary times brands and franchises are everything.
