Great Game

Unread postby EvilNed » 09 Jul 2009, 22:09

Big Heroes fan here. Played since Kings Bounty, actually. Loved all games so far, even Heroes IV which I liked because it was so different.

Now I just started playing Heroes V actually. And yes, it's nice. Especially Hot Seat. But there are a few gripes.

Where are all the sweet maps? I remember that so far, ALL Heroes games have come with some really nice Hot Seat maps. The ones I've tried so far are nothing special and kinda boring. They're Okay, but they're all super symmetric which is just dull. Anyone remember Dominion from Heroes 2? That was a great map! Lots of land to explore and lots of towns to capture. I understand that Towns are much more valuable now than in Heroes 2 because they generate much more money. But still...

So if possible, can anyone recommend me a few good Hot Seat maps that are extra large? Or bigger? That are just nice to sink into for a nice long game and just explore and expand?

Also, quick question regarding the Red Dragon. He has worse stats than the Black Dragon, but more initiative (and I love initiative!), however I could never get his special ability to work. The one where he deals an extra 50% with no retaliation. How do you get that one to work?

Re: Red Dragon

You have to be standing next to an enemy stack to activate Incinerate. Took quite some time to activate it myself, actually. :)

Nice to meet another Heroes fanatic! :D

Thanks! I'll be sure to try that next time. But really, is it worth getting Red Dragons over Black Dragons? I mean that and +1 initiative is the only thing the Red Dragon has going for it.

Dunno, I prefer them. The No Retaliation and +50% Damaga does it for me. Plus you can cast spells on them (Vampirism, Regeneration, etc.).

I prefer them as well, mostly because you can't use the old blackies + armageddon trick anymore due to the walrock's irresistible magic, which sadly affects his own troops as well.

I never really found myself in a position to use that special ability. Because most of the time, the Red Dragons flew in, slew their target and then next turn they just have to find a new target to fly too. So they're never standing next to any target. Not enough to warrant that ability, however.

When fighting neutrals, the enemy is often split in, say, three stacks. I always try to position my red dragons so that when striking one of the stacks, they also stand next to another one. Not always possible, but enough of the time it is.

Right, but by the time you get Red Dragons, fighting neutrals is usually the least of your problems. At least for me, but maybe I'm just slow at building up. :P
