No - you played too much Dice&Dice :P
Ghouls were demons (kind of djinns) which were often portreted as hyena - and indeed they eat corpses. And so people who robbed greveyards were suspect to eat corpse too and were named after these demons.

Next we have Dune were IIRC Ghoul were some sort of clone. And next we have D&D were ghoul=undead and next we have copy of that in other RPG games. :P
(but I think some earlier books/films/etc. misplaced ghouls as undead, so it is not only D&D fault)
