HOMM3 Freezes

Unread postby Horizons4 » 04 Jan 2009, 13:40

Hi!

When I play HOMM3 (Fall of Steadwick scenario in 2nd campaign) the game freeze after a few minutes. For an example it happend when I tried to save the game and also sometimes when in battle. It just locks up and the sound stutters and I have to restart the computer. Alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del won't work either.

I do not have problems with any other games. Have the platinum edition so it has the latest patch. And I have been able to play it normally before. Running XP SP3.

Any help would be appreciated! What I'm hoping for is if someone have had the same similiar problem and know how to solve it.

Can you try to mute the ingame sound for the scenario?

Maybe you can solve the problem by changing the compatiblity modus of your heroes3.exe (rightclick on properties) to Windows95/98 or NT, instead of running with XP. It worked for me with the wog.exe. Look here.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Turning off sound didn't solve it though. Will try the compatibility thing, but it has always worked before on XP without changing compatibility.

Service pack 2 screwed compatibility for many games, so maybe SP3 did the same too (I don't use it so I don't know)

Seems like changing compatibility to Win 98 did the trick. So far no freezing. Thanks to all for your help! I'll let you know if it ends up freezing later on.

I never had any problems playing HoMM3 on SP2, nor did it happen with SP3...
You can either agree with me, or be wrong...

darknessfood: it depends on the games you played. The older game, the bigger chance to find the problems. However if the developers still exist, there is a quite large chance of a patch solving those problems

Well I never had problems in SP2. But since so far it seems to work fine when setting comp. to Win 98, I am assuming that is the solution in my case. It might be different from the platinum, regular, complete editions of HOMM3 also, who knows :). I just hope this was the solution, and for now it seems so.
