See, on my own i would never ever have discovered that you can use defend with a hero, coz that's the last ting i would ever think to do...

Some of us learn the hard way, such as accidentally hitting the 'D' key when it's your hero's turn in a critical and intense hero vs hero fight in multiplayer. Profanities ensue.

It happened to me many times to hit D instead of C (to cast a spell) :(

I vote that they should ban defending with the hero... it's pointless :P
No matter how powerful one becomes, there is always someone stronger. That's why I'm in a constant pursuit of power, so I can be prepared when an enemy tries to take advantage of me.

As Asheera said - Resurrection works well as Arcane Archers have few hit points, BUT....remember that each casting of Resurrect reduces the hit points of each creature in the stack by (I think) 10%. So if the enemy attacks them again you lose even more.

Resurrect is best used with Blind or Puppet Master. That way you can get several ressurects in while the enemy only has 1 stack which he can't use for a few turns. Once the AA's are all back, pound the final stack. There is no retal when Puppet Mastered units are hit.

(Mind you, I haven't tried the latest patch for ToE yet).

As for the offensive, I always try to get the Boots of Windstriding as they add 1 speed (1 combat movement space) in combat. Add that to Tactics which your favourite Ranger should have (Attack / Archery?) and you can quickly move your units across the board to block / attack enemy missile troops.

Plus of course Teleport.

When you're creeping again and again you'll eventually get bored of clicking those buttons so much, trust me ;) and you'll switch to using the faster keys.

And Wait is not a lot better than Defense - especially now that Defense can get Morale and the unit will act like it used Wait, but gain 30% defense as well.
The best way to protect your Arcane Archers is ... kill your opponents' dangerous creatures before they threaten you. Sylvan is blessed with lots of creatures at high initiative, and Arcane Archers deal some insane damage. Split your Arcane Archers, split your Druids, and take down the enemy ranged creatures / casters before they become a threat. Worst comes to worst, you might be able to kamikaze some Sprites to block Ranged shooters as well.
I'm a hypocrite because I suggested that all life is sacred and should not be wasted without good reason.

I don't remember seeing that happen. You read it in the manual or saw it in game?

I've seen it happen frequently but it's not something to bet on unless you have max morale.
I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

I've seen it countless times...
