As far I remember story of Aeneid was ordered by Roman officials and was fake (opposed to Homer's poems which were based on real events).

the Aeneid was "link us to the greeks who's culture we have adopted", but Homer's poems aren't all that much more based on real event either... sure, there was a place called Troy that got destroyed a few times, by greeks once or twice, but that's about the only thing that has any proof behind it...

Malekith was not (I've corrected that in my post yesterday already, so I don't know where you got it from now), but Gil-Galad was indeed in FotR - played by Mark Ferguson.

Rather it was:
Virgil, create our [Roman] ancestors that have so amazing stories like Greeks. Oh, and it would be good that we are from Troy.
We are great people and we can't have worse history then Greeks.

And about Iliad - you can read it and find real Troy.
You also know what equipment or ships were used in Mycenaean Greece. And all thanks to Homer's poems.
