OK, remember a few years back, when all games got cracked the same day in which they were realesed. All you had to do is put on a crack. They still put copy-protection on them anyway.
Remember Warcraft 3? It had protection, and it was broke right away. How did the protection increase sales if you could get a cracked one right away? And yet they still used protection.
That's why I don't buy that they have "a better grasp of how piracy affects them". I don't see it as "they have alot of money = they must know what they're doing".

Because there are a lot (a hell of a lot) of people who don't know how to crack a game (N00B's). All these people know how to do, is to put in the CD, and copy it with Easy CD Creator or Nero (whatever software was there when they bought their computer). So a protection (even a simple one) stops a lot of these people borrowing their friends game and doing a simple burn (I know cause I have a lot of friends who do that and fail). These are also the kind of people who go, Oh well, I guess I'll have to go out and buy the game now. I've seen the effects of simple (and complex) copy protection has on increasing sales first hand.
Furay.

A couple years ago, Intuit tried adding copy protection to TurboTax because the mgmt was convinced that everyone was pirating TurboTax or sharing it with their friends. But what happened is there was no increase and sales and there was a huge uproar because a large % of people had problems with the copy protection software; Intuit pissed off alot of it's loyal customers, and gave them incentive to switch to H+R Block software TaxCut. There was such a backlash, Intuit had to provide a fix that would disable the copy protection, and they removed the copy protection crap in next year's version.

Lets be honest now, you don't need SF or any of the current cd-protection programs to stop people like ur boss, even the oldest ones can do that.
It's not people like him that made them upgrade the protection.
Did I ever mention how much PA rulez?
