Tough choice. There are plenty of good Rangers here to select from.
The question is, which creature specialist you dig the most? Which secondary skills are the ones that give best profit for your money?
Some people will definately disagree with me, but here's my reasoning:
Clancy's unicorns are faster and stronger but I still really don't see him as candidate for primary hero selection. I dig the pathfinding skill but because of his specialty, I exclude him from the list. Unicorns, I think, are quite capable even without additional bonuses.
Ivor is a great choice. Elves, Rampart's only shooters need additional bonuses to help them against the enemy that will come to them as soon as he can. Archery and offense are great skills and fit in nicely with Ivor's Elvish theme.
Jenova's Witnesses... I mean Jenova and her followers seem to have business skills quite in order and in early phases of the scenario her specialty helps the player, even more so on resource poor maps. She starts with one skill on advanced level that can be seen as a disadvantage. I believe some of you agree with this wholeheartedly.
Kyrre is a great starting hero, there's no doubt. Logistics specialists rank always at the top in my hero selection plans.
Mephala's specialty can save your units from much punishment but be careful when approaching enemy castles: those shooting towers will take advantage of a bug related with the armory skill.
Ryland is another excellent choice for starting hero. Diplomacy and leadership is a powerful combination and add his specialty to the summ and you'll know that hiring Ryland is something to really consider.
I'll tell you that treemen boosted with extra speed and att+def can really make you smile.
Thorgrim starts with one skill only, doesn't it look suspicious to you?
But if you dig his specialty, resistance, which most of my H3 playing friends seem to do, and other people most likely, then he's your guy.
Ufretin, the Dwarf is the last on my list. Sorry to say this, Ufretin, but
your Dwarves are at their best with their mining skills and their banking skills as well. Thumbs up for Dwarven treasary! (which has nothing to do with this hero's skills and specialty...)
With all this said, I choose Ivor to lead my armies to victory.
Second goes to the logistics specialist. (Kyrre)
Third place I award to Dendroid specialist. (Ryland)
