My vote goes to Thief. Disarm skill is "must" in my opinion. In addition (MM7) Thief could use a pair of swords as Master. Not bad.

I was told to use a thief if you dont have the following:

*High HP character to keep the party alive

*A Self caster with preservation and regeneration

*A way to repair items broken by failed traps


However, I've gotten by with only using a ranger with skill 10 Expert and a +10 item just fine. Disarm traps is not a HUGE deal. Maybe in the haunted mansion.

The question is what game do you prefer to play: a long game with training to high levels or a short game with training to enough level (13th or a bit more).

I prefer the short game. In this case the thief rules. This person needs smaller number of skill points in comparison with others classes. The minimal requirements for thief are:

GM Dagger -- 54
Master Armsmaster -- 27
Expert Leather -- 9
Total -- 90

A thief bits a knight. Its speed of killing is very high. Daggers are in most cases better than other weapon. The speed of killing dragons in Eeofol with two thief and sorcerer having daggers was fantastic. I sometimes killed a sole green dragon in one turn! The blue dragon was a bit more difficult but not so than the red one.

About monks. The monk requires much more experience points than any other person to reach his maximum in skills. For the short game, it is not the best person.

About disarm. The disarm skill is not necessary to be high. The expert level and a high level disarm ring are enough for almost all chests expect most powerful in Titan Stronghold. But when you open such chests you already have enough protection from magics damage and these chests are easy to get.

In Rev4 Mod of MM7, the initial level of dizarm and ring +45 to dizarm were enough to open all chests without problem.

Not good at all. A pair of daggers at GM is much better for Thief than a pair of swords. It is no comparison in their effeciency.

Yeah, on second though, maybe you CAN'T get footgear with armsmaster since I don't remember it much anymore. But I do remember gauntlets, chest armor, headgear, and shields.
I always use Gauntlets for enchanting anyway.
