The songs for the towns are okay. Not my favorite of the HoMM series though. But I love the battle music in HIV. So much so, I use it in my HoMM3 game. Fits better in H3 than it does in H4 actually.

Off topic: Lately, for my HoMM3 music, I have been using music from the movie Last of the Mohicans. Nice.....very nice.

Hmm. It was definitely not an easy decision.

Haven: The first few seconds of this theme sounds very theological and reminds me of Guild Wars. Yet, it sounds too pessimistic near the end to be fitting for Haven.

Academy: This reminds of Heroes of Might and Magic! It feels adventurous, mysterious, and exciting.

Asylum: Compared to other themes, this one has a rather dull introduction. It also sounds like there are many women lamenting for someone's death. Near the end, it also sounds too dramatic to be a theme.

Preserve: Hmm... this theme is very interesting. There's just a bit too much vocality.

Necropolis: Its theme is very mechanical and powerful. It seems to symbolize a machine churning out skeletons and other undead creeps. Yet, it sounds too dramatic to encompass the entire game.

Stronghold: Though it sounds very lively and bright... its a bit too fast... for me.

Well, I have to with Academy. It's absolutely amazing. While the other songs are excellent, they seem too be enacting a story rather than characterizing any particular alignment.Though, Haven would've been another great choice. :creative:

This is two seperate competitions for me..;

How much does the theme fit with the towns? [From least to best fitting]

6. Stronghold: How it fits Barbarians, I don't have a clue. It's just a really generic song that doesn't stand out and doesn't give any feeling whatsoever. Maybe it fits with the thought of duelling axe-wielding heroes or something, I dunno..

5. Preserve: the start sounds more like a theme for the shire, imo, or some Elf town in LOTR. Then the female voice begins, and she does sound like an Elf singing. It sounds like, well, preserving the land and the spirits. But the male voice sounds way too human to fit in. The melody itself stays the same throughout, with small changes going on. When the male voice stops singing at 1:35 and it reverts back to the female voice alone, you can hear small joyful sounds. And that, imo, fits alot better than all the sadness you hear otherwise in the theme. Nature creatures are supposed to be cheerfully gay, lol. Shamefully, the male voice returns again. By the time he stops singing at 2:38, the song has gotten on my nerves. But it makes up for it at the end, where the melody is gone, and you can hear a harp playing it in a more joyful tempo. Slowly other instruments are added to that, until suddenly a guitar (I think?) messes it up with some random *pling pling pling* and it all sounds very amateuristic when it ends. I think it fits the thought of Preserve, but it doesn't have anything to do with nature at all.

4. Academy - it sounds cheerful, like a bunch of birds flying freely. Which doesn't fit with Order at all, imo. Order is supposed to be dull, confined. On the other hand, it does sound like the story of a nation that strives to be perfect, especially at the end. Come to think of it, the Academy and Preserve themes to be switched around. Then the Academy would have a boring, orderly song with false undertones (just like corrupted politicians or something, a thought I somehow connect with "Order") and Preserve would have it's cheerful forest creatures theme. Would fit both perfectly that way.

3. Necropolis - this theme obviously doesn't go for the feel of sad armies of wandering dead, but rather it symbolises the evil wizard who enslaved them. It starts out as a melody that warns of danger; something fierce and horrible is coming.. At 0:54, it's here, and it's raising the dead and doing all sorts of unspeakable things ;)
1:35 has the undead army assembling for the fight, preparing, skeletons storming over the fields, liches directing them, vampires flying in the night, slowly turning into the sound of battle.
2:20 to the end sounds like a victory theme that reverts back to the start.
The theme does fit with the undead. It does not fit with the demons, however, so it only works for half of the town, imo. Then again, what do demons have to do with Death anyway?

2. Haven - I think it fits with Life and humans, in the veign of the song having ups and downs, switching melodies, it's very epic, and the feeling of the song switches between hope/victory versus despair/bravery (yes, bravery, it sounds like even though all hope is lost they still dare to go on).

1. Asylum - this one is just perfect. Really nails it. The first 50 seconds sound like the sad kind of music that would be played in a mad-house, or something an evil professor who's lost his last bit of sanity would listen to. Then it switches to a melody where it sounds like the armies are on the move, obliterating their enemies. Then, at 1:18, it turns into an epic piece with back-vocals sounding like the start again but louder and more defined, then suddenly it stops at 1:45 - and you hear drums, indicating the final battle is about to begin. A sence of haste, nervousness, chaos, represents that battle, and then the battle is over at 2:02 and the music drops to a sad tune which connects back to the madness it felt like at the start. All these chancing themes and sudden stops fit with Chaos so well, it's frightening. Like an evil mastermind with a musical talent is orchestrating it.

How much do I like the song? [from least to best]
6. Stronghold: I just can't stand this song. It got on my nerves the moment I turned it on, even moreso because I remember the song and it annoyed me whenever I played the faction.

5. Preserve: Unlike the Stronghold theme, this one has some parts where it sounds like it could be something good, but then it gets ruined again. That got on my nerves so much.. :(

3/4. Haven / Necropolis: these two share third place. Haven is a little better than Necropolis, but it's also more boring and generic. Just listening to them, without thinking of what they respresent or which is more original or whatever, they're in the same leage.

2. Academy: the cheerfulness may not fit with Order, but I do like cheerful music :)

1. Asylum: wins this competition, easily. It's an inspiring, evil, changing song. And I hate songs that sound too much the same all the time, which is why I like how much this song changes around.

--

So my vote is for Asylum; it's both the best song, and the most fitting one for it's faction/philosophy.
