So, darknessfood, is it a tradtional Dutch thing to light up bonfires on New Year's?

edit: Oh, and another impression of the Netherlands: Dutch people have an obsession with steep stairs. (I guess it's for saving space or some other practical reason, but it's still funny/weird).

Yeah, it kinda is.But it depents on what part you live. Sometimes the police starts to whine about it.But yesterday our fire wasn't forbidden

. A police car stopped,my girlfriend and myself were just walking towards it. The police stopped, ans ireally thought they were gonna give us a hard time, but they just sayd "gelukkig nieuwjaar (happy new year)" messed around with their lights and they left

Guess Flemish ppl share more than the language with their "neighbours" at the North. Same thing I've noticed in Flanders. Took me a while to learn how to go up and down their stairs w/o the fear of making a wrong step (and of course there's no talk about "running" up and down the stairs, like I used to do back home).
