Dead mouse falls out of Christmas cracker

A New Zealand woman who pulled apart a Christmas cracker got more than the party hat and joke she had expected, finding a dead mouse.

Betty Lawrence, a grandmother from the South Island city of Invercargill, made the discovery sitting down to Christmas dinner with 20 relatives, The Southland Times newspaper reported.

"I had said to my granddaughter 'what's the smell?' and we couldn't work it out until we pulled the cracker," she said.

Ms Lawrence said finding the dead and partially decomposed mouse curbed her enthusiasm for the Christmas meal.

"It ruined my appetite for the rest of the day," she said.

Pigeon poo plunge wins New Yorker $7m

A former New York doorman who slipped on a pile of pigeon droppings on a subway station's stairs has been awarded over $7 million in compensation.

The New York Post says 56-year-old Shelton Stewart slipped on the station steps in 1998, injuring his neck and back, despite saying he had noticed the pile of excrement on his way to work the same day.

A jury awarded Stewart $8.87 million in damages, but New York city's transit authority only has to pay 80 per cent of the sum, or $7.09 million, since Mr Stewart was found 20 per cent liable for failing to avoid the fecal pile.

Mr Stewart was reportedly planning to use his windfall to buy a house and take his two daughters and grandchild to Disney World in Florida.

Suspected burglar gets trapped in pub chimney

Firefighters in Alice Springs have rescued a man who was trapped in a chimney for more than 10 hours.

They believe the man had been trying to break in to the Gapview Hotel bar at midnight when he got stuck.

The 21-year-old man was discovered by a staff member who heard him moaning this morning.

Firefighters and ambulance officers spent one-and-a-half-hours trying to free the man, eventually removing a brick fireplace with jackhammers and masonry saws before pulling him out.

Alice Springs fire station officer Mark James described the rescue as "unusual".

"When we first got here we, because we've never been confronted by anything like this before, [it was] a little bit daunting," he said.

"But we just worked through it and he's fine and now we've got him out."

The man was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital by ambulance.

A hospital spokeswoman says the man is in a stable condition with minor back and leg injuries and is likely to spend the the weekend in hospital.

Police will interview him when he is released.

Entire beach stolen

Border crossing crooks were blamed after an entire beach including beach huts, sun loungers and sand were stolen.

Land locked Hungary has no beaches of its own and tonnes of sand had been shipped in to make the riverside at Mindszentas as near to the real thing as possible.

But managers who closed up the leisure park for winter have found that 6,000 cubic metres of sand as well as playground rides, the huts, and even the wooden shops had been stolen.

Head of the local council Etelka Repas said: "It is crazy - I would have thought it was impossible to steal an entire beach. It was cleaned up and covered for the winter and then suddenly this week we saw that it had totally disappeared - beach and all."

Eight new EU states from the former communist bloc, including Hungary, joined the Schengen zone - which means an end to border controls between EU states in Europe.

"It has probably been shipped over the border now without any checks being made where it will be easier to get rid of," Repas said.

Police are investigating.

'I went into a coma and woke up a mum'

Lisa Allinson fell into a coma and woke six weeks later to find she was a mum.

The 34-year-old was left fighting for life after a rare pregnancy condition caused a stroke and loss of memory.

She lost consciousness hours after giving birth to son Benjamin and was put on a life-support machine, reports the Daily Mirror.

Lisa had no recollection of the birth and was stunned when she eventually came round to see her new arrival.

Yesterday after six months in hospital, she was celebrating being allowed home.

Pharmacist Lisa, from Bolton, said: "It's brilliant. I don't remember much - and I don't really want to."

Her husband Andy, 34, said: "The doctors and surgeons are scratching their heads - it's a miracle."

Giant shredder helps purge bad memories of 2007

New Yorkers who suffered a tough 2007 took their anger out on photographs of ex-husbands, old letters and annoying mobile phones, consigning their bad memories to a giant shredder.

"I got rid of my ex-fiancee after five-and-a-half years," 47-year-old Pierre Lucien said.

"I shredded her picture, because I have very bad memories. I caught her with another guy while I was on vacation for the summer."

The event took place in the Times Square intersection that is set to be packed with hundreds of thousands of new year revellers this Monday (US time).

Most of those at the "Good Riddance Day" came with bad memories they were keen to forget.

"I shredded the obsession to drink, the obsession to use drugs, the obsession to women," one man in his 40s said.

"I am recovering. I have 32 days clean today and I wanna continue, this is a good start."

Others threw in files of paperwork. One threw in documents relating to a home loan that he - like so many other Americans - was unable to pay off.

Geraldine, a 36-year-old Ecuadoran woman, came with her two daughters to symbolically say goodbye to her ex-husband.

"He behaved badly and then left us," she said.

"I also got rid of work colleagues who behaved badly."

One woman was destroying a pile of papers - "10 years of a bad relationship," she said, smiling.

Joe Costanella brought along the bane of his life - a garbage can bought by his wife.

To the surprise of onlookers, he took a sledgehammer to the can, prompting others to throw in mobile phones for similar treatment.

At the end of the event, a garbage truck took away the shredded papers for recycling.

A $US250 prize for the most creative act of riddance went to New Yorker Eileen Lawrence, who symbolically shredded her former boss.

Newlyweds caught up in drag racing from church

A newly married couple feared for their lives after their chauffer-driven car was caught street racing in Sydney's west.

Police caught the luxury sedan racing another car on the Great Western Highway last night.

Police say the hire car reached 130 kilometres an hour in a 60 kilometre zone.

It was taking John and Laina Tauranga from their wedding to their reception.

Mr Tauranga says it was a scary ride.

"Me and her were like, kissing, but ... by then, the cops had already pulled us up," he said.

"Yeah, we had a bit of fear. I was thinking about her more, thinking about our lives together. We've just started a new life together and we don't want to die at this age."

Both the chauffer and the driver of the other car will face court next month.

Japan's inmates dislike 'unstylish' pyjamas: survey

Japanese prisoners dislike their unstylish pyjamas, feel their cells are too small and want better meals, a government survey has found.

In the survey of inmates who left prison in the year to March, the former inmates said their vertically striped greyish pyjamas were unfashionable, close to half said the colours were bad, and 44 per cent said the design was ugly.

Almost 70 per cent of respondents who shared cells with others said they had too little space, while 44 per cent of those in solitary confinement said their cells were too small, the justice ministry said in a report issued on Wednesday (local time).

Over half said their meals were bad and having supper at 5:00pm was too early, while almost 75 per cent wished for more bread with their meals, rather than rice or noodles.

About 81,300 of Japan's 127 million people were in prison as of December 31 last year, according to government data.

'Missing' swimmer found at home

Surf lifesavers say a large-scale search for a man reported missing at Scarborough yesterday could have been avoided if he had told friends he was leaving the beach.

The search for the 42-year-old began when friends found his belongings unattended on the beach about 1:00pm AWDT.

Three helicopters, four rescue boats and two jetskis searched Perth's northern beaches for the man, only for him to be found at his home two hours later.

Surf Lifesaving WA spokesman Chris Peck says people need to let their friends know where they are to prevent resources being wasted.

"It's critical that people communicate with each other when they're in the water and leaving the beach, because a lot of resources were put into searching for this person," he said.

"At the end of the day, they were at home and their friends were still down at the beach. That communication's important."
