I believe it's just the wood that lies above the level of the deck (speaking of old ships, like frigates) and is used for protection (of the crew) against enemy fire/shrapnel. It probably also protects people from falling overboard.According to the definition found using google it is not what I thought. I thought it was some kind of wooden shield on boats, but it looks like it's only a part above the upper deck (that definition sounds useless to me, it tells where it is, not what it is). Maybe Mr C. may tell us.
