I have an X850XT, looking at options now .... think that maybe an 512MB 8600GT at $144 is a good buy, or the 2600XT for similar

or there is the 512MB 3850 for about $280 or even better the 3870 for $330 seems a great buy if I have some spare cash and for top end I could get the 8800GT overclocked slightly for $403 .... though it is an eVGA and I have no idea whether that is crap or not or the ASUS version for $399

If I am to buy one, I want a really good one without paying an insane amount for it.

well the 8800GT is by far the best performer, but also the most expensive (duh), but it might just hit a great price/perf ratio, then I need to decide if I need to spend on extra RAM, thou I might give that a miss

My GeForce 7600 has worked fine, no complaints :) I used to have a crappy card in the old computer, I could see almost transparently through walls in some 3d games :disagree:
I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

Don't envy them this is waste. One 8600GT 512MB is enough. And can be even passive cooled.

Hmmm really? Well it comes from you then, I won't. ;)

And now the problem is, if my MB can handle that kind of v-card. Is it available on PCIE?

Cool. I thought there was a new slot that has been released. AGPs were phased out here, I can't find one for my old computer. Anyways how would I know that my MB can support that kind of v-card? 'Cause I think I had browsed thoroughly on my MB manual but can't find if it can support a higher v-card.

It's going like this, historically: PCI, AGP, AGP2x, AGP4x, ble ble unused AGP version, PCIe, PCIe 16x, PCIe 2.0 (in two years probably.)

So now all cards kinda should be PCIe 16x.

Do you know name of your board? It's mostly question of the bus compatiblity other things aren't so much of factor. Although it's discutable(rightfully), anyway they shouldn't be, in pure theory.

Therefore if it's the same bus (slot) the card will run.

I think I had a crappy board. I was asking for the latest model of ASUS but they were out of stock so, what I had here is MSI K8NGM2. Seems an old model but, hey it has a PCIe slot, so it made me wonder... ;|

It will run any current card.

MSI K8NGM2 It sounds like cheap board (all in one solution) but purely by specifications it still fits.

If the board is having any exceptional behaviours I didn't found any detailed references to it.

Hmm... yeah it is. I was rushing and besides I don't want to go back to the store so I just bought it and the main reason is... I want to play HoMMV immediately! :-D Mine isn't socket X2 it's more older, socket 939 :tired: What it can support Dual Core?! Odd... I know Dual Cores only fits on X2s.

Anyways, I hope hmm... this 8600GT 512MB we were talking about would work here. *prays*

The board is supporting X2 but purely on its own older slot. Yes, hey, here were dual-cores even for Socket939. Har-har ;)

Nowadays it's AM2 only true, true.

the 512MB 8600GT is certainly tempting at it's price point, but I so love the 8800GT .... anyone got one of them babies?

@Mr. Pol

I wonder if it works the same as those with socket X2. Btw, what architecture does dual cores have? Simple or Complicated or probably some new tech? ;|
